Throw a big expensive party to push existing customers away from your own products. Way to go Oracle!

7ina : we have mainly IBM systems , but using also SPARC for some core services , mainly for risk management and other financial services. We have tried some years ago the x86/linux way, with very negative results , so switched back to unix. Similar experience with cloud.

We currently have a SPARC installed base ranging from some old M9000 to some quite fresh M6-32. After OW my boss decided to swap all SPARC systems with P9 unfortunately (I personally like much more Solaris than AIX).

Your boss will only buy Sparc servers for core business? What company are you guys at? Is it Kmart or Sears???

2sxt - it's true that they aren't investing anymore, roadmaps show that it's the end of the line for Sparc. Obviously some orgs want to stay on prem. I suppose that as long as they can keep making Sparc servers that somecustomers will buy them, even if there are no future updates. It's important to remember that those Sparc server sales generate very profitable service contracts.

2sxt here. what I wrote was what an HW executive at OW told my boss. they were discussing about some future projects for my company, and the Oracle executive was very clear about the fact that Oracle is not investing in any onprem development apart something called cloud at customer (I may have understood wrongly, maybe the name could be slightly different), and that they were retiring completely from the Sparc business. that was really a big shock since we have tons of Sparc servers that we need to refresh, and the executive said we must either buy an Exadata (no way my boss will buy an x86 linux system for the core services) or much better a cloud service (noooooooo way my boss will go cloud for the core services)

" heard from the horses mouth that Supercluster will be sold but development has stopped. They will sell the current model for as long as customers want to buy it."

That is what I have heard as well.

I don't see how they will support it for only 5 years. There are customers out there running machines much older than that.

M8 Supercluster will be eol'd end of FY19, i.e. may 2019, with a lod on nov 2019. official announcement in early 2019, feb-mar timeframe.

customers with a Supercluster IB will be able to buy upgrades for the next 5 years.

eol is due to the risible number of units sold, that do not justify the cost of a product line.

100% percent of zero is still zero.

I heard from the horses mouth that Supercluster will be sold but development has stopped. They will sell the current model for as long as customers want to buy it.

"I highly doubt this changed since ORCL stopped SPARC development."

Heard through the grapevine that SuperCluster sales are up over 100%.

" If customer wants on-prem sell them whatever equipment they want, otherwise they might run to a competitor."

Indeed, why send them to HP or IBM?

How many superclusters does ORCL sell in quarter? To say people are lining up to buy these seems a bit of stretch. They certainly weren't lining up to buy these several years ago. I highly doubt this changed since ORCL stopped SPARC development.

Makes no sense. Customers line up to by Superclusters, why EOL it? Who's making these decisions? It's free money for Oracle. If customer wants on-prem sell them whatever equipment they want, otherwise they might run to a competitor.

I'll guess that "shuttered" will follow other axed hardware platform patterns at ORCL: The majority of the development staff will get shown the door and a skeleton support group will be retained.

SuperCluster Platform sales to be terminated within Fiscal Year.

Support Services will continue.

I think the poster is trying to say that there won't be any major updates. Of course they will have to support it, and for a long time , as they are still selling them.

Internally it’s been announced that it’s going to be shut down, no more. Most likely because it’s based on SPARC.

Can you elaborate? They still have to support it, so what do you mean by shuttered.
