Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Partnering with IBM’s Watson- is SF playing with fire?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all up for new technologies in the business, but bringing IBM's Watson into the picture seems to me like not such a wise move, given the bad publicity Watson already has. My two cents, a lot of risk for SF and a very little to gain. Thoughts?

This related to the recent patents under file w the USPTO somehow tying into “Life Mgt services”.

If IBM is partnering with Watson, it's yet another indication that our executives have no clue what they are doing. They have been given the results of several rounds of analysis that show the product is basically worthless.

Watson is garbage. I was part of a team that kicked an IBM crew out and told them to take Watson and jam it, largely because the product was an overpriced hunk of junk. It's basically just a natural language processor. It's not even SOFT AI.

At the time my department rejected Watson, there was at least one other initiative trying to get it to work (and failing).

I'd be surprised if this ever amounts to anything.

@pxf.....Most likely. We’re in the data business, and that means we need to be in the (anything that processes data) business as well.

State Farm is moving forward with several digital initiatives as the largest personal lines P&C insurer in the U.S. by market share rides the digitalization wave shaking up the industry.

The company has launched a $100 million fund, State Farm Ventures, with the goal of increasing its involvement in and adoption of insurtech. Led by innovation executive Michael Remmes, the unit will focus on "acquiring startups or strategic alliances that support our core products," says spokesperson Angie Harrier.

I think SF has a lot of data and has not shown the ability to effectively use it. If Watson can achieve this then I’m all for it. Bad publicity is a construct, look at Nike. It’s all about the $$$.
