Curious what this will look like down the road for us. It went from a cute little concept in Seattle, and now there's one in Chicago. There are job postings on Indeed for Amazon Go in NYC, so I guess that's next.

It is not a secret that WFM is finally getting some self checkout registers. It was announced during a town hall presentation months ago. The big question is how much of the AmazonGo technology will be applied to WFM. In FLA, we have a lot of retirees who are already annoyed with the disappearance of the printed flyer and do not own smartphones. What I speculate is that the 365 stores will get fitted like AmazonGo and maybe some metro stores. Other stores will probably just get augmented with self checkout and keep some cashiers.
Twenty years from now, I would not be surprised if there are no cashiers in supermarkets in general. I am old enough to remember gas attendants at every gas station who would wash your windows with every fill-up. Self-serv gas came fast and hard and I recall many older folks really struggling with it.
Lots of articles about 3,000 Amazon Go stores (cashier less) by 2021. That is the trend. Walmart is adding a lot more self check out registers and removing cashier operated registers in all their stores and Sam’s Clubs. At some point in the near future they will be all self checkout stores. If Whole Foods still exists it will be self checkout as well.
