Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Verizon's IT Culture

Over the last 5 years or so, the culture of VZW IT has changed dramatically. Instead of empowering engineers, they have essentially turned away talent and replaced with VDSI resources.

There are 2 big problems here.

  1. Time zone issues: The turnaround on projects takes longer due to waiting on direction for completion of development tasks.

  2. Quality of work is not the standard we are used to at VZW IT prior to the last 5 years.

Most IT employees are treated with a call-center mentality and are being pushed waaaay beyond reasonable work hours, etc. In other words, you keep cutting the staff, things will start spinning out of control. After last year's cuts, we have hit critical mass velocity. Negligent things are happening now as would be expected. No worries - It's InfoSys' problem now. have fun!

Hanz looked in his desk and there was a note from Lowell

  1. RIF

  2. If first RIF doesn't cut enough do it again

  3. Outsource IT,

He jumped straight to 3.. 700 Million spend, 44k jobs moved.. If the average employee cost 17k for benefits, 17k * 44k = 748 Million, the outsourcing payed for itself...

Yes, all cultures change. But when you gut entire departments which are customer-facing, or which serve the customer-facing departments, then you lose customers. This will result in more cuts.

NSS, er, NS used to be allowed to create tools, do their own stuff, and consistently outperform expectations in a general way. When the direction changed to "have a vendor to yell at" we got stuff like HP BSM. Now we're back to "go build it out of C code and open source parts" again. (But definitely don't let it take up any actual work or project time.) It's true there are a lot of folks that saw portions of their duties sourced to VDSI as well.

All cultures change. 2018 is different from pre-iPhone 2008, much different...

With 5G looming, what's to expect? Status quo?

AI? Narcotization of everything? Gig based economy?

Open economic war with China?

The world is different place today, VZ has to change.

I hate EVERYTHING that Hans is doing, yet I do recognize the need to change things.

There are many orgs that are static culture-wise, utilities, universities, government, etc. If you want stability go there, you will never find it in communications and high tech, it's just gonna keep changing, often...
