Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

The Union Pacific......Otherwise known as organized crime.

For decades, the UP has ruled their employees by intimidation and fear. Ever listen to conference calls with upper management? They will be more than willing to swear at you, threaten your job, and intimidate you. They are the modern day mafia. And, for all of you "You don't like your job, then quit" mo--ns, let's see your cavalier attitude when you are affected by the lay offs. Better yet, the poor saps left standing, how is your life right now? Worried about your job? Putting up with management saying they can replace you? Everyone p-ss-d off? Are you doing the job of three people after the layoffs? Don't worry though, you will eventually be in the same boat. Good luck.....Know anyone wanting to apply for a job with the railroad.....Tell them to run, and find something different.

The comment about ethics made earlier...

I always laughed at the ethics articles. Anybody with a reasonable attitude could quickly identify they didnt give 2 c-aps about it. Immean, safety stand down one morning, lance cutting you off doing 90 on i-480 in his mercedes that same night.

True. They toot thier horn and high horse about ethics. This is because they are trying to portray and manage a image publicly.

Reality is, they have all the parts needed to play good cop-bad cop. And they do it horribly. And sadly, get away with it. Think about it: the "in" crowd/nepotism bunch vs. Line employees. Management vs. union. Incompetent hr dept that answers to nobody. Corporate audit vs. Anything or anybody they want to shut down or fire. Lance/beth/rob the wall st stooges vs. Thier own professed corporate/culture initiatives that, "whoops", blow up. What im saying is, and others have said, dont expect to be an A+ student getting a 2 and 3 ranking and remain employed for long.

Up is a total joke. If youre a job seeker, stay far away. If youre there now, accept you are a dispoable number, nothing more and the likelyhood you cash out on pension and rr retirement is extremely slim. If youre the great great great granddaughter of grenville dodge, hop right in, youll do great. Youll be a director by next quarter, want to come to the invite only house party this friday at beths house?

For the official no. Official record, only certain groups allowed for colunteers for severance in IT. Is it comolete B.S. yes! Why were certain groups allowed? And in the same breath it was said this is not voluntary. Lies lies, now starting to trickle down into middle and lower management. It was only a matter of time. Everybody has their own network, lower class need not apply. The joke is on you middle management, you are a target as well, if not bigger. Nobody is safe.

Krapper - I am 45, make $200k and have $2 million saved for retirement, and no debt with a college degree. That’s worth a lot of Krap.

Just leaving this here.....

Basic Compensation + Options

Lance Fritz: $13,794,200 + $3,183,150 in options

Robert Knight: $7,297,670 + $12,437,200 in options

Rhonda Ferguson: $2,290,440 + Options

Elizabeth Whited: $2,621,060 + $225,600 in options

Oh and by the way just before the first round of layoffs this October guess who traded 20,000 stocks @ $163.81, days later went down to $149... sounds like Knight. SEC should take a look at this

"Well whoopty do!! College degrees don't mean Krap."

Except, you know, when you're trying to find a job that pays above minimum wage or offers health care when you don't practice a trade.

IT_BI_GUY,

Good write up. You've convinced me...I'm making the right decision to walk (I mean Run) from this place in next couple weeks. There has to be much much more in a job than this!! Omaha is a big place with lots of decent employers to work for. I'm going for it. Good luck to you also.

Thanks again. T

I was laid off at HQ from the IT department on Tuesday and couldn't be happier. I was going to be moved to a capital project and was technically "safe", but I realized two weeks before cut time, nobody would be safe and the 30% cut was likely a conservative public number, but the private one is likely much higher. Luckily, IT was a little more civil and asked individuals if they wanted to voluntarily take the severance package. The time was right. I said yes and I let everyone know I was taking it and the reasons for doing so. It was interesting to see the younger, new employees completely checked out after the first round in October. They barely interacted with each other, played on their phones frequently, stayed past 5 not doing anything productive, and looked a lot like caged animals. So much fear. Psychologically, they looked drained with an entire year left of wondering when the hammer would fall. I suspect they believe their is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for their loyalty, but loyalty is a one way street at UP. My advice: use UP and leave. Take the severance package and run. This is a company from the top down filled with indifferent managers (not all are, but a very high portion) who lack the talent and vision to be managers. If you think by being a high performer will get you a raise or higher bonus in the next two years, you're kidding yourself. Double the work at the same amount of pay and a pat on the back for sticking with them is not compensation. If you're there for experience, great, but if you want to move up in your career, you gotta get out. The modified Hunter Harrison model they're working from shows you how lacking they are in governance and vision. Truly, real leadership hasn't existed since Jim Young. The internal statistics tells the story. Its simply amazing. They should also take down they Jim Young quote on the walls of the UP Development center at HQ. That simply doesn't apply any more.

"...willing to swear at you, threaten your job, and intimidate you. "

Gee...that doesn't seem to jive with the Ethics b.s. they publish on the company website all the time? Hard to imagine our leaders would act this way!! Lol.

I have witnessed the same poor behavior many times -- and been subject to the intimidation. It's not right. It's not professional. But it's done intentionally to manipulate people. These are poor leaders that know no other way to manage and lead people.

Poor leaders indeed. And vile to boot.

I’m one of those “poor saps” and actually life is amazing now. We got rid of a lot of dead weight. We cut excess and non- necessary items. I’m working less hours.

I’m not being cavalier either - I very well expect to be cut. But I have worked other places and know this is just a job. Unless you live in nowhere Nebraska and have no other skills- everyone is marketable. I live in Omaha and have a degree that is necessary at every single business in the city. UP employs 4,000 people in a city of nearly a million. So if it’s me I’ll walk out the door and not look back. But I’ll hang on to the UP stock because it’s great to be an owner.

The whole thing s---s for everyone EXCEPT for those on the 19th floor and stockholders getting their pockets filled with the billions of profit that EVERY EMPLOYEE worked their a-- off for only to get slapped in the face with the layoff or given very sh**ty hours and worthless days off that don't suit them or their families at all. Management there has NO respect for anyone. I hope everyone that's left has enough brains to update their resumes to leave the glass palace emptier than Lance planned it.
