Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Claims

For experienced claim handlers with a JD in NYC there are a lot of jobs. You’ll probably have to take less money than AIG. I,was offered three jobs that fit the above after getting RIFed over the summer. I turned two of them down. There are jobs. Get out.

Insurers hire lawyers to defend their insureds...no point in paying for that twice. A good claim handler needs to know coverage and that is not what a JD brings to the table.

Insurers are requiring law degrees when hiring for excess claims handling and other complex claims

I can’t imagine why any employer would favor JDs for claim handling. All it tells us is that you are likely not a very good lawyer, not that you are a good claim handler. I have seen this first hand. Give me a non attorney with a solid claims handling background over a lawyer.

Why did you wait to get RIF'd?

Negotiate better while you have a job.
