Thread regarding Google Inc. layoffs

Solving the wrong problems

I love Google's tech but they have no idea how to sell to the enterprise. They seem to be more interested in solving problems they care about rather than the problems customers care about. Amazon is much more obsessed with customer success than Google. That's a fundamental problem in the culture.

Read this on another board here, but damn if this isn't Google to a T. Even people from outside can see it, but our leadership remains blind to it.

Yes, that hits the nail on the head with Cloud. Google is very engineering driven, which is good to an extent... but it leads to a focus on whatever the engineers happen to be interested in, which can change from month to month, as opposed to problems the customers are trying to solve.

Amazon leadership principles.

2 that really stand out.

Customer Obsession

Leaders start with the customer and work backwards. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers.

Are Right, A Lot

Leaders are right a lot. They have strong judgment and good instincts. They seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm their beliefs.

Think Big

Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Leaders create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. They think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.

Deliver Results

Leaders focus on the key inputs for their business and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, they rise to the occasion and never settle.
