As a manager, sales are plunging and the moral is decreasing everyday. We ask our employees to do so much with so little while cutting hours and paying far less than fast food. Many of our best employees have been either laid off or sought other employment because of the atmosphere. Everyday employees ask whether they should find somewhere else to work because of the uncertainty.
Granted, on the outside every last customer loves this company and swears they want to help it survive. The truth is that so many use it like a public library, spend hours a day reading books in store and not buying. And many of those have no shame about it. We are the new trendy library of free materials. Of course the company sees this as being great for atmosphere and hoping it will be enough to compete against competitors.
I hope the stores survive. Everyday they change direction and throw out 20 new ideas to get consumers to stay. We are now more of a toy store than a book store our customers muse. We sell baby blankets and beauty kits. We throw away boxes of toys and other items the company says must go. Wastefulness will be one of its downfalls. It throws away ceos like its merchandise.
When I got laid off I was p-ss-d but honestly I’m so glad I was. Barnes and Noble was such a horrible place to work, I’m sad to have seen it go the way it has. What’s the point in making sure magazine racks are stocked and faced properly according to corporate specifications when the store you work at barely has 10 people coming in a day & nobody reads magazines? It’s like everything is run by some strange algorithm?
Management has no money to sue people nowadays anyway.
Booksellers might as well speak out as the company has already hit the iceberg and the ship is sinking.
Like B&N has enough money to sue everyone- haha!
This is the time to speak up and say exactly what you think!
Well I guess if you have already been laid off you can say what you want on that stupid facebook page. What they gonna do, fire you, sue you? I still don't have a job or any insurance. Still very angry and don't actually give a c-ap about any of the so called"friends " at my old store. All were two faced, back stabbing dogs. And management was the worst. Yeah I am angry and I hope the same fate befalls them all and barnes and noble implodes upon itself.
.
Remember when they had everyone sign that statement about not saying anything bad about the company on social media? You could not facebook negative comments or blog any criticism or suffer possible termination.
That FB page is a joke. Hardly anyone writes anything bad about the company for fear of retribution.
A former head cashier I worked with said that Barnes just dump as much garbage on you as they can until you quit or get yourself fired. Or laid off.
Another former bookseller say they just keep coming up with reasons for you to quit.
They've warned people for writing on the B&N Facebook Page but they can't stop the truth here!
The conditions are miserable and it's like they want people to quit. I'd be really shocked if there aren't major layoffs after the holidays. I was told that if some stores don't make their marks, they'll close this year.
Merry Christmas!
