Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Retraining?

What are the chances General Motors will be providing some kind of additional services to laid off folks to help them (us) land on their feet (since they certainly have no issue stabbing us in the back to save a few bucks?)

I'm talking about stuff like retraining or something to that effect?

Most state governments offer subsidized retraining for the unemployed.

Anybody know how outside training firms can offer free or subsidized programs to laid off GM employees as a goodwill gesture? I work with a corporate training company that would like to help out in some way for the holidays.

That would cost money so no. I had a friend coin it "economic recycling", they do this on purpose.

If they pay you X amount of dollars, and your about topped out, they can simply let you go. By the time you rehire elsewhere, you will happily accept less just to be working. There's no incentive to retrain you, or find a new job lateral to your position. It's about keeping wages low.

The government should employ these people laid off. They can use the bailout money that was earmarked for jobs to pay it.

Certainly wish all large companies could offer retraining programs for employees whose trades are being discontinued. One of the arguments today is that there is more jobs than available people. Haven't seen this. For lower skill level jobs, these companies are certainly willing to hire illegals and H1Bs to cut corners. Not your Father's company anymore.

Highly unlikely there will be training offers this time around.
