Will Layoffs for Direct hires be based on performance?

Any information on direct hire layoffs, 1. Who will be deciding, we dont think its egms 2. On what basis will layoffs happen( performace, bad reviews)

It will be at the director level or above. Our managers did not know. They found out the days following, when we simply were not there. We phoned in of course to relay the news, and they were shocked.

It was quite literally treated like the supermarket shopper, one that stops in the isle, then does a complete 180, oblivious to everyone around them. This is the capacity of senior GM intellect, at a time of record profits.

It won't be based upon performance. It will be based upon cost, and age, but there are ways around age discrimination. Why pay experience to do the job correctly once, when you can pay inexperience to do it three times, before they get it right. I've seen so many failures of youth, cost the company so much money.

However overall, GM is a very successful company. Sometimes, just sometimes, you get a CEO that doesn't align with that description. Mary is striving for the game changer title. As vision works both ways, as having vision to know where your going, and having vision to know which obstacles are immovable and best left avoided, she can equally find herself with the legacy of having completely failed with time. I am quite cheering her on in that, as sometimes corporations must be held accountable.

I'm quite sure her and here many millions of dollars, would not care either way. This is why you should never have the wealthy, run corporations. No ties, no interest, no cares in the world. Millionaires, do you really care one way or another? A beach and a drink are always a few days away. I trust none of them.

Yes, agree that cost reduction is the strategy used for the layoffs which means older, higher paid employees, no matter what their performance or dedication. I find it so hypocritical that the executives and CEO do not hold themselves to the same standards and will maintain their jobs even though they have completely failed the corporation in devising a successful business model and strategy.

Not performance based. Cost based, as well as age based.

You know what they say...

Why pay the experienced to do it right the first time, when you can pay the inexperienced to it over three times, before they finally get it right.

I've witnessed this so many times. As intelligent as GM likes to believe they are, they always get this simple fact wrong. They ALWAYS will. And that's nothing they can ever purchase.

Performance will be one factor used in the decision process, but other factors will also be taken into account: long-term strategy, desired staffing levels, location, etc. At times like these companies tend to place more attention on higher paid employees (i.e. older workers) as they are more expensive to keep around, usually have an outdated skill set, and can easily replaced with cheaper labor (i.e. recent graduates) when things turn around.

Whether they admit it or not, the decision maker is ultimately your direct manager. Keep in mind that in some cases your manager may have little or no choice in the matter. For example, if executive management decides they no longer wish to have a presence in California and you are based in California... guess who's out of a job.

Remember, GM is not firing anyone during this process. No one will be told "your performance was poor" or "you didn't work hard enough". You'll be told "I'm sorry, your role within the company has been eliminated". In other words, the job that you were hired to do no longer exists and therefore you are no longer employed with the company. General Motors will not be able to open a requisition to hire a new candidate for that role for a period of time.
