WHAT the heck, US employees sure get the short end of the stick (in my opinion) : "Since we have about 55 vacancies in Belgium, we expect to be able to reposition a large number of colleagues and to keep the number of redundancies to a minimum."

ANTWERP 2018 - Nokia Bell has announced on a works council that by the end of this year 107 jobs will have to disappear in Antwerp. That is what the joint trade union front of the supplier of equipment for the telecom sector says on Tuesday and is also confirmed by the company.

According to the unions, staff shrinkage is part of a strategic plan that Nokia has announced and where jobs are disappearing across Europe. "Digitization and cost savings are the main part of this strategic plan," it says in a press release.

The job loss would not take place through a collective dismissal. According to the unions, the management wants to spread the redundancies over time and bypass the procedures of the Renault Act, but that is being contradicted by the company. "It's about a loss of 107 jobs for a total of 1,403 full-time employees in Belgium, there are too few for the Renault Act," it sounds.

Nokia wants to give as many employees as possible a new place within the company. "Since we have about 55 vacancies in Belgium, we expect to be able to reposition a large number of colleagues and to keep the number of redundancies to a minimum." An earlier dismissal round in 2016 is also mentioned. Eventually, half of the 126 employees whose job was lost took a different position.

In the meantime, the trade unions are mainly left with a lot of questions. "What the further impact of this plan will be in 2020 is completely unclear at the moment." The unions want to quickly sit around the table with the management.

In homeland Finland, Nokia wants to eliminate 350 jobs this year, or about 6 percent of the 6,000. This, too, is part of the operation to cancel costs of 700 million euros worldwide. Jobs in Finland are also disappearing from the Finnish telecom operator. Nokia wants to delete 460 jobs in the period 2019 and 2020.

Nokia Bell has been the new name of Alcatel-Lucent in Belgium since mid-2017, after the acquisition in 2016 by Nokia.
