Considering the kind of reputation Union Pacific is building right now - laying off employees even when things are going great - who do they plan to employ when they need some positions filled in the future?
Is there an experienced and knowledgeable person who would accept a job in a company like that? Seriously? I know I wouldn't. Would you?

I am glad I was one of the first let go. I have since gotten another job at a bother railroad and am much happier. If called back I would gladly decline the offer.

That’s not how the foreign worker process works in the US. UP can’t just replace general management positions with foreigners. Educate yourself before you spout stupid sh--.
Apply for a job at CSX or CP and you will work for UP after the merger. It’s going to happen. Hunter Harrison is right. It is going to take co consolidation.
Lucky for us union employees, they cant bring in foreign workers and pay cheap. It pays to have a trade. Not to just sit at a computer.
UP will claim a lack of qualified talent and then hire foreign workers and a cheaper rate.
Many will feel what you mentioned here but time heals everything, when someone is desperate to bring that paycheck home every month, people will go and work at UP. Right thing to do is keep your options open and when a good opportunity comes along, change your job.
