Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

They can lay us off in this way because solidarity is weak

This is something that many of us don’t want to hear but the fact is they can do layoffs in this way because there is no unity among the workers and we show little or no resistance to whatever they do. They can lay us off, discriminate us based on our age, hell they can do whatever they want.

The fact is that most of us don’t really care what happens to our coworkers, or care very little. Sure, we all feel bad for a colleague in our group that’s been laid off, or folks at our location, but let's face it, most of that comes from our own fear of suffering the same faith. From the moment we know we are safe that empathy seem to become weaker and weaker. The sad thing is that that’s the exact reason why they feel they can do this to us.

But what if we were more unified. And to clarify , I’m not talking about joining the union or any of that union -non-union c-ap, but basic human solidarity. Imagine if all GM plant workers stopped production symbolically for half an hour, to show solidarity with the workers which plants were set to close. It would at least send a message, and what are they gonna do, fire us all? Unfortunately our empathy doesn’t go any further than chating around the cafeteria or the water cooler.

Look at all the posts asking if this is over and lamenting over how hard it has been to wonder if you will survive the cuts. Imagine how stressful this is for those who worked their butt off for GM only to be shown the door, many of whom were targeted because of age not poor performance. If we don't stand against this, it will happen again.

Looks like it's time to form a white collar union. Problem solved.

Great post. I would go further and say that some of the 'safe' workers feel superior to the ones getting cut little realising that they could be the ones getting the boot in the next round. Forget about empathy. Typical attitude is 'I got mine. Who cares about the rest?' from top to bottom. GM is just microcosm of society in general.

United we stand, divided we fall. For the same reason unions are criticized are the same exact reason why they work. Is there any wonder why they want to reduce and eliminate unions?

All you may see are the small parts that don't work within a union, meanwhile they stand together to protect all, both the lazy, as well as the hard working. At the end of the day, in the white collar circle, it's you standing alone with no one behind you. It means you have zero resistance when the guillotine comes down on your head, other than the shop around your skills and compete within a market of other people your caliber.
