Thread regarding CVS layoffs

Employee t-b-cco usage...

I know that this is a touchy subject, but it really bugs me, because I HATE smoking. I hate any and all t-b-cco products including e-cigs and vaping devices, there all bad! Now we stopped selling cigs years ago, WHY does corporate still allow employees to smoke? We ended t-b-cco on the premise of health for our customers, isn't it time to do the same for employees?? Now I know they had a smoking cessation program for colleagues but I'm pretty sure that's gone now? And here we were given no-smoking pins to wear and yet it is very hypocritical of corporate to allow employees to continue to smoke. It's time for a company wide ban on any and all t-b-cco products! Company gave up cigs and it's time for colleagues to do the same. What does it say about us that we got rid of t-b-cco but continue to allow employees to imbibe in their usage? I get that corporate doesn't care about us, but still. Soooo.....rant over. Thoughts?

How can it be illegal when other chains still sell them? There’s a “green wal(l)” in my hometown with a clinic & they sell them.

Actually when your “on-shift”, or “on-the-clock” then yes corporate could tell you no smoking when your on shift or on the clock. They can’t ban you from doing something on your off time, outside of work, but once you enter that store, they can tell you no smoking on shift. Now you only get 1 half hour break per 6 hour shift in my state. And we punch out for break. So in an 8 hour shift a smoker would be allowed to smoke only on their break, but at no other time since you could ban smoking anytime you’re punched in on the clock.

29 states and the District of Columbia prohibit discrimination based on legal activities outside the workplace, which includes smoking t-b-cco, so if they can't make it company-wide because it depends on the state, it is impractical to implement.

I am the original poster of this thread. I anticipated all the haters would come out when I ranted like that, but I chose to rant away anyway. First off I apologize if I offended anyone, that was not my intent. I have family members who have been ravaged by the effects of smoking and trust me when I tell you this it is NOT pretty. So for me this is personal. I have held this in for a long time and finally decided enough is enough. So forgive me if I came across as a crazy madman. I can assure you I am neither crazy nor stupid. I took a risk posting this and KNEW it would backfire, but I have a thick enough skin, so the insults don't bother me. I am just passionate about ending smoking once and for all, and I stand by what I said. In this day and age why anyone still smokes is beyond me. Now to the poster who said we HAD to stop selling cigs, because of medical services we offer, I did not know that. VERY misleading on the part of corporate who spun the whole thing on the premise of "helping customers on their path to better health".

Cannot sell tabacco products where medical services are are provided. That's why stopped selling them, not because sudden surge of health is the focus, had to. CVS would continue t-b-cco sales like alchohol., anything for profit.

And after that they should ban the eating of all red meat, force people to exercise, quit indulging in sugary snack and quit drinking

People get nicotine from c-gare--es and vaping devices use liquid nicotine. So while it may not be t-b-cco it’s still bad for you! And maybe you can’t legally prevent employees from smoking, you CAN ban all smoking while on shift! And you can make all stores smoke-free buildings!

You cannot legally ban employees from smoking.

OP here, to add one more thing... Smoking is a filthy, disgusting habit that needs to go the way of the dodo bird! I say again, it's time for a company wide ban on employee smoking!
