Thread regarding IBM layoffs

DevIT, F&O, Cognitive Solutions future

Hi. I've got friends, with open positions, in those organizations. Does anyone know the future of these orgs, in general, but specifically regarding layoffs? I'm not happy where I am, but feel somewhat safe, and thankful to be employed. Thanks.

There are no safe jobs when revenue is flat, profit is down, and red hat has to be paid for. But let's also get real, even if you stay you're facing declining benefits, and nothing resembling a raise, let alone a COLA. At best you'll tread water, at worst you're losing buying power...and in either case, assuming you have marketable skills. You're missing out on significant wage growth.

Be careful if you decide to move in this direction. All three of these positions can easily be offshored. You need to look at the cost of the work product produced vs the profit generated. SW solutions are the easiest products to offshore due to zero manufacturing having to be invested, and a large pool of talent available around the world. The exec’s at IBM have been tasked with maximizing profits, and that usually means finding a lower cost workforce

DevIT - careers for professionals who have had a long absence in the field?

That suspiciously sounds like the "new collar hires" initiative. (anything to trim wages)

Most of those DevIT jobs will eventually be automated so I that's risky.

Cognitive or AI I think sounds much more interesting and definitely where the future is moving.
