If you are a white male, better start interviewing. In a forced ranking environment, combined with strict promotion targets for women and non-whites, you will be run off. Either hire a good plaintiff's lawyer, or get the hell out of dodge.
Under rank and yank it is easy. Your manager just has to rate you the lowest. No reason, no rhyme. Even if you have the highest possible proficiency rating, rank and yank wins.
In any given team, all members are ranked best to worst. So even if all have highest possible proficiency rating g,one is still the best, and one goes bye-bye,
For one, they won't fix your attendance like they do for others. They'll coach you specifically and ignore others that do the same as you do. If a manager wants you gone, they'll find a reason.
Make associates actually work and not stand around talking. After about of week of doing there job they quit no need to target people everyone needs to grow up.
It depends on a number of factors, but I'll describe what happened to me:
I had 14 years in, no probs, received all raises; not a ripple in the water. Then a co manager transfered to my store.....and I could sense right away there something wrong with him. Sure enough, by the time I realized he had fixated after and was building cases on me, it was already too late. This man fabricated s-xual harrassment claims against me, and of course there was never any identifyhing my alleged accusers, 'that's all confidential'; I tried open door policy, sought help from H.O., the works----to no avail. Btw: S-xual harrassment claims are the one thing no man can defend himself against----you need absolutely no proof to get somebody on that. The more you deny it, the guiltier you look.
So, right at the 15 year mark, this sadist finally got me fired-----and then tried twice to fight my unemployment. Failed both times, too. The judge didn't like Walmart's confidentiality policy when it came time to bring forth their witnesses against me, so I got my full $$ out of that. And a new career, AND, three years later, I am ever so much happier and more prosperous than I'd ever been at Walmart.
Happy ending for the co manager, too. His name is Phil Crawford from Forsyth, Il. ------and he was one of the co managers ousted in last years mass management purge. And I'd never believed in Karma before that!
Just be fair and consistent with all employees. Naturally the ones that don’t work will end up leaving. Set clear expectations and stick by them.
