Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Questions for the GM people

Did the layoffs that occurred in November/December also include middle and upper managers?

FYI I was an engineer with GM for over twenty years before I quit and moved on to another job. Having survived the '08/'09 layoffs I was disappointed that hardly any middle managers were not cut while many worker bee types were axed. Looking now from the outside it appears as if Barra is actually cutting many middle manager jobs. Is this true?

There will be more IT executives laid off. I know one that is expecting it. You can’t have the significant reductions in classified without significant in unclassified. Leadership wants to reduce $ more than headcount and executives have big $

Nobody said 25% of executives in IT. It's 25% of executives across the board.

We did not lose 25% of executives in IT. More to come.

25% of executive managment has already been laid off. Right before the holiday it happened. Emails went out about who they were.

1) the layoffs were announced in October but have not yet been implemented.

2) GM does not have processes in place to rid themselves of poor managers- it is the Peter Principle to the nth degree. GM adores people who talk a big game and look like they’re taking action- regardless of results. We will see if they actually break the mold here, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I noticed a couple of people left my department in August. I guess that's why.

They did layoff directors... No managers or sr managers yet.

At least in Austin, they laid off 10% of the staff last year. They went department by department, and it took months.

Very few, if any, mangy managers have been cut. Like you said, mainly worker bees feel the brunt since they are easy to layoff, as needed

The only cuts I know of so far are contractors but they said 25% reduction in executive staff was coming in November, so who knows.
