Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Found a new job

So I just got an offer for a better position. It was surprisingly easy. The market is hot right now. They want me to start 2/11. I am assuming that if I give two weeks notice today, I will not get severance. So would it be inappropriate to wait until layoffs and give no notice if I’m not given the axe?

Use your 2 weeks vacation. Worst case you pay it back using part of your severance.

Look at it this way. If you are on the list, they will not give you a 2 week notice, more than likely you will be escorted out the same day. Play your odds and stick around until layoffs are complete. If you did not make the list, you have the option to stay or move on. Lovey Mary, : )

Feb 4th makes zero sense for the layoff date. Can someone elaborate?

F--- GM. But don't wait, take the new job and get out as fast as you can.

As much as you'd want to get the heck out, and whether or not you're laid off, stick around for the bonus. We all did work in 2018 and we deserve to get whatever payout. It's bad enough that GM doesn't pay out your vacation days when you quit. only company that doesn't do it. s---s.

You said job hunting was easy. What did you do to find your new job?

On Feb 4, 15% of the staff will be leaving with no notice or knowledge transfer to their surviving colleagues. The company will deal with them leaving and you leaving. So don't worry about notice.

Wait for the bonus. Start work around March.

Family , shelter and food come first not GM , take the new position immediatly. I have been out of work since December because of GM and having a hard time finding new employment , are you kidding me?

With what this company is doing to us right now and you're worried about giving them 2 weeks notice? Yeah right.

Already asked them for more time since I was originally planning for the layoffs to happen on 1/25.

Tell them you need an extra week or two to start, because you want to leave your current assignments in a more complete state for the company, and leave good notes so it can be continued once you go. It might buy you some time and makes you appear more professional and diligent to the new employer.

They can learn about the real you later. Bwa haha

I say see what happens. If it happens next week great, if not it's their fault for making people not be straight with them, then I would say you are going to a competitor, they walk you out that day.

See if they lay you off on Feb. 4, and if they don't, give them a week's notice instead of the usual 2.

I would say it depends on how many years you have and how much severance you would get. If you get between 1-2 months worth their it might not be worth the risk.

Run , run fast! GM management will understand , your not burning a bridge , it's called self preservation.

What if GM doesn’t lay you off?

It’s nice to have the new job but I would not recommend burning your bridge to GM.
