Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM will never have the workforce they had

I’m not saying there are no quality young workers, of course, there are but who the hell will trust GM anymore and place their careers in the hands of a company that did this to their loyal workers. Who in their right mind would base their life near a GM plant or work at GM and treat it like a permanent solution? All the people that had another option are already leaving in droves and when you count in that younger people generally show less commitment to one company, the conclusion can’t be anything other then GM will end up with a workforce that is far behind in terms of quality then the on it has now.

The mantra in product development that “We need to cooperate and work more closely with China.” says a lot about who is calling the shots. Fairly convinced that aside from government loans, GM must have taken (and still takes) a considerable injection of capital from China. Everything you hear about the theft of intellectual capital is not only true but GM hands it over willingly like some sort of sad corporate estate sale. Most people in North America don’t want or care for electrification and autonomous - but who does? Yes, you’ve guessed it. Your hidden Communist overlords.

I had an interview today, and the hiring manager laughed at the way GM does business. He said when you come to work for us, you work for us for life, unless you choose to leave on your own, or you really mess up and we need to let you go. We don't fire, we rotate IF there's only the slightest bit of slowdown, but we DO NOT let go of talent. AND, there is no shortage of slowdown. GM has a history opposite of this, and this coming from a former GM man. I am very much hoping I land this position, both for their integrity, their far superior position in the automotive world, as solely due to the respect of their comments.

The best thing you can do for those that are up and coming, is to become an advocate against GM, and tell the honest truth against this company. Be honest, let the stories prove the company to be worthwhile or not. If you accept a position with them, act as a mercenary for hire. Provide a skill set for a wage, but do not elevate beyond. Don't purchase their products and let time prove this correct or not.

If you want to change the culture, you have to have some principles yourself. I own five, well six non-GM vehicles, and I will never promote a GM vehicle to a friend or family member. Honestly if I was rich and could waste money, I would buy a GM product to beat it and burn it to the ground. That is my level of distaste.

I've worked within GM for many decades, yet I will never advocate for, because their culture is evil upon their employees. They treat their employees like dogs, and I've seen it well before Mary ever became a powerhouse within GM. You will find your place one side of the line in the sand. If you are experienced and opposed, it's because you put in the time and have witnessed the pain. If you are youthful and hopeful, your time will come to prove these statements true.

Vision, works two ways. Having the vision to see where you are going, and also having the vision to see the immovable roadblocks to avoid. I speculate that humanity only chooses to see where they want to go, and completely avoids the truths they choose not to see. This is GM.

They can free all the cash flow they like , who at this stage in the game would even want to work for them anymore ? GM is over and they should just give in to that fact , merge with another automaker already that knows what they are doing. My gut says this is why the house cleaning is occurring , A merger looks!

Their greed is and will be the demise of GM . I agree with everything that's been posted here, I have been saying it for years. What makes these CEOs and top leaders think by doing all of this will bring them the talent that they claim they so desperately need ? How can they retain talent? By setting up more ping pong table like at Pontiacs global propulsion building! For all the millennial hipsters and their lumber jack beards/tight trousers lol , seriously GM your not Google and you never will be. With GM managers it's more about what college you graduated from that will get you in the door period , way to many arrogant folks with not much humility at GM both young and older alike.

I leaving as soon as the bonus is paid out. I would have probably left regardless of this layoff situation, but now GM IT is turning into a bigger dumpster fire. There is no way anyone can trust senior leadership.

They rolled the dice from 2004 to 2009. Gave the good people the work of two or three people. It didn't work out very well for GM, can you say ignition switch recall? Pretty sure they think they'll do better this time around because .....

It's not about projects, it's about money.

Remember, they want to increase free cash flow. Increase EBIT by 30% by 2020.

That's been the plan since Drive2Great and that slogan started getting pushed.

Older and more highly paid workers are the targets.

The layoff has not started yet so how do we know what criteria that they will hit? Some rumors said that they will hit the projects that are either done or delayed or have no value. Just have to wait and see.
