I was RIFed end of year last year. We were doing great work and were actually adding real dollar to the business. But the company had decided to move to a different technology infrastructure and decommission the whole team and the platform we just spent a year to build up. Plus the marketing dollar is tightening (basically everywhere in the market so I’d avoid any marketing related positions or company). I was hired at the beginning of the year so my tenure with AIG was a bit less than a year. I was lucky that our team sensed that things were going south for us and we all started actively looking. I was also lucky that I’m in machine learning and data science which is a hot field. I got multiple offers within 2 months of looking and they were all a bump on what AIG is paying me. I’d say start looking whenever ‘you have a bad feeling’. AIG is a good name and take advantages of the WFH flexibility to interview you’ll be okay!

I don't know of any BU within AIG right now that aren't at jeopardy of layoffs...it's inevitable with large companies. If you feel it's time for a change...then go for it.

wow i didn't read all of the comments before responding.

Based on the comments below, if you do take it, please keep your resume up to date.

Before you take it, I would also check the salary to make sure it's up to par. Don't settle for a low salary and/or package. And @Xn1CwfE-1ody is right on point, that's the MO, RIF then folks realize that there's not enough coverage and try to push work on others and/or hire more 'resources' for less $$.

Make sure you are also aware of the following:

--work hours

--how often do people have to put extra hours to meet goals (also is there an expectation to do so)

--If you work extra hours, is there any compensation (ie extra $$ or comp days?)

-- can you work remote if needed

Make sure you understand this before signing.

Layoffs happen all of the time @AIG When I started (10+years ago) there were layoffs. Layoffs happened every year. I was laid off last year along with many others who were great performers...it happens and will continue to happen. If you feel that the AIG opportunity is a good one, I don't see any reason not to take it. If it doesn’t work for you, there is no reason why you can't leave. My advice if you take the job: I wouldn't view this as a 'long term' position at this time. Treat it almost like a consulting position (with much better benefits). Get all that you can from the job (besides just a paycheck). This can be a chance to gain valuable experience. With the way things are looking, there is a possibility that things will be get better or worse. Keep your resume and linkedIn profile up to date, casually keep an eye out for other positions and keep in touch with a handful of good recruiters. If something else good comes up, but you are not ready to leave AIG, why not refer another friend/colleague…if they get the job, you will may have an ‘in’ at that other company should you need it. Lastly (and this goes for any ‘Job’) don’t feel as though you are ‘s---’ at one place. Always remember that the only thing guaranteed is change. Any place you go can and will let you go if they feel the need and will find a way to justify it...remember this works both ways.

If you have no better job offers and are unemployed no reason not to take it. But I know several people who have come and went in the life in retirement unit. If you’re talking to sales position the money is really not there. Good luck

I wound not work for AIG...Life and Retirement is not that strong, and I have seen new hires let go in the first 6 months. Chances are AIG is doing what it normally does, Do a bunch of RIF and then realize they are short handed and then hire new people for less $$ and limited benefits.

Good luck. AIG is not the company it used to be. I have seen people hired and then laid off within a one year period of time. My recommendation: go work for a Company that is stronger...financially.

Curious to know the reason of layoff inspite of being a stellar employee. Is Layoff happened just because of project ending.. or work moved to contractor/outsourcing companies ? Any specific reasons...is it dependent on manager?

Don’t know which dept in L&R but L&R has had massive layoffs over the last 24 months. Good luck. I was in L&R and laid off in Aug 2018. I had been a stellar employee with great year end reviews and bonus at 100% or better.

L&R is fine. They are the shining stars during Town Hall events and quarterly reviews. Gen Insurance needs to improve.
