Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Tell the honest truth about GM

I had an interview today, and the hiring manager laughed at the way GM does business. He said when you come to work for us, you work for us for life, unless you choose to leave on your own, or you really mess up and we need to let you go. We don't fire, we rotate IF there's only the slightest bit of slowdown, but we DO NOT let go of talent. AND, there is no shortage of slowdown. GM has a history opposite of this, and this coming from a former GM man. I am very much hoping I land this position, both for their integrity, their far superior position in the automotive world, as solely due to the respect of their comments.

The best thing you can do for those that are up and coming, is to become an advocate against GM, and tell the honest truth against this company. Be honest, let the stories prove the company to be worthwhile or not. If you accept a position with them, act as a mercenary for hire. Provide a skill set for a wage, but do not elevate beyond. Don't purchase their products and let time prove this correct or not.

If you want to change the culture, you have to have some principles yourself. I own five, well six non-GM vehicles, and I will never promote a GM vehicle to a friend or family member. Honestly if I was rich and could waste money, I would buy a GM product to beat it and burn it to the ground. That is my level of distaste.

I've worked within GM for many decades, yet I will never advocate for, because their culture is evil upon their employees. They treat their employees like dogs, and I've seen it well before Mary ever became a powerhouse within GM. You will find your place one side of the line in the sand. If you are experienced and opposed, it's because you put in the time and have witnessed the pain. If you are youthful and hopeful, your time will come to prove these statements true.

Vision, works two ways. Having the vision to see where you are going, and also having the vision to see the immovable roadblocks to avoid. I speculate that humanity only chooses to see where they want to go, and completely avoids the truths they choose not to see. This is GM.

"Work for us for life"... That's a heck of a bold statement. Nobody can make that guarantee.

This one did, so f**k off. Whether they follow through with it is he's own word or not.

Either way, I'm willing to bet on this company, given the countless empty promises from GM.

GM is a cultural mess.. and it’s all management that has been around for way too long.

One of the posters stated it isn’t greener on the other side..BS.. capitals.

I have worked with all OEMS as a supplier and GM is the most incompetent of all. Suppliers bust their a-- to meet very demand.. and if they’re not it’s because they are tired of GMs BS.

Being part of GM now, I see where the problem lies. There is zero accountability by management below director level, DREs have zero power even though they are responsible for majority of the work. And the only way to move up is to b—w someone (hypothetically) for years.

GM is nothing like Ford or FCA. Those two might be disfunctional f—cks at times but they get their sh-- down.. as one poster said.. management can’t even take a s—t without planning it out first.

Fire all those useless f—cks!

The need for massive layoffs is proof that company management is incompetent and failed at running this company. They should all do the honourable thing and resign in shame at once.

It is exactly this type of attitude that causes problems for the company. You should do the honourable thing and resign at once if you don't believe in the corporation for which you work.

If you have never worked outside of GM you don’t really know what it’s like outside of GM.

You may think that there are greener pastures at another OEM, or at a Supplier, or even outside of the auto industry, but the reality is, every company is in business for profit and every employee is a person who is hired for wages to perform a service to the company.

When the company is no longer interested in paying for your services, then your employment can be terminated.

It’s not personal.

It’s not any different from one place to the next.

Even Tesla just let 3,000 employees go this month. Ford has announced layoffs as well so what is this mysterious Auto company that doesn't fire people (stupid because that means employees can slack off without fear of getting fired)?

Someone is not telling the truth. The minute you think think you have a job for life is the minute you’ve already lost.
