8000 people to shed. So far we have 1500 contractors let go and 2250 who took the voluntary separation package, leaving 4250 to be axed. I saw 53,000 employees in north america, but I can't believe that's all salaried. However if it is, that means, 4,250/53,000, or roughly 8% will be let go. That means there's less than a 1 in 10 chance of being let go. Meaning you're more likely to keep your job than lose it. Maybe 53,000 is right. Sounds like IT may get deep cuts, but I"m curious about GM Autonomous (I'm talking Ultracruise not Cruise) and Electric. Are they untouchable?

I f*cking hate the auto industry. If it weren't for the fact that I have family in Michigan, I would have stayed in the bay area. Cost of living is high, but high paying jobs are plentiful.
They offered 17000 people the vsp, expecting 8000 to take it. Only about 2000 did

I just looked at my group there are 20 people, all in their mid 30's or younger. I'm in my 40's. I wonder if I'm prime pickings. Further, I tried going to WTC to pick up my laptop friday morning. Security hassled me - I thought it because of the gas outage. Now it's clear, they're recording badge numbers etc, to monitor sabotage, etc.
Why do people think GM wanted to lay off only 8000 people total?
Yes, that's how many people they wanted to take voluntary separation when they targeted people with over 12 years with GM (i.e. older people).
But targeting only older people is age discrimination and illegal.
So maybe in addition to the 8000 older people, they also wanted to get rid of 3000 younger people to cover themselves legally.
All we know is that 8000 people being laid off is a MINIMUM.
I guess we'll find out next week.
