I'm in Texas, and you can collect severance and unemployment at the same time here. However, I do not think you can apply until your actual termination date (March 1st for most of us), since you are employed until then.

Retirement is not a factor, you can't be forced to retire. Even if you are collecting Social Security, you are entitled to at least some unemployment benefits in most states.

Start researching your sown tate's requirements right away. Good luck!

It isn't better to enroll early. If your severance earns you more than unemployment benefits, you can't collect, nor would you want to. Additionally, Marvin has a new policy that if you DO NOT collect for two consecutive weeks, you must re-enroll again from the beginning.

Unemployment of today is NOT like unemployment of yesterday. It is much more of a pain in the butt.

You can apply for unemployment right away. It’s better to submit the application early.

Ack. Don't know what's going on with this site, but my comment (nnj) was not written so poorly as it appears

Is the severance being paid over time, or in a lump Doem in Michigan, was let go from a different company 13 years ago and they paid me severance as a lump Doegot UI every week of the 2 months I was out of work, except the week the severance came.

Yes you can. However, be mindful if you decide to take any 401k distributions afterwards while on unemployment. If a lump sum is distributed, don't collect benefits for that week and do not report the distribution. You are leaving that week untouched and still banked. Marvin will shut you down if it's a large sum that you report, assuming that you went back to work. These are the words of an agency rep.

Unemployment doesn't care if you earn non-wage income such as equity distributions for example, these are exempt, but they do care if it's wage for time based income. The limit of how long you can not collect is two weeks, before you have to re-register with unemployment all over again.

If you have any doubts, call up the agency directly to verify every question you may have. You don't want to mess up while the ball is in their court.

Yes, unless you're eligible to retire. If you're forced into retirement, then no.
