Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Are TRACK Engineers safe?

I’m terrified. I’m a new TRACK engineer, finished school, and have student loans to repay. They sold me on the future, promised a long, successful career with General Motors and their “vision of the future” when they offered me my position just over a year ago.

I declined other OEM’s for this. I’m not a senior in college now, I’m potentially a kid with no experience now trying to get a job among other colleagues who just lost a job they have had longer than I’ve been alive.

I haven’t seen too many confirmation on TRACK engineers being let go, but MPG seemed pretty depressing today. What has been discussed?

If Mary is trying to build GM for the future it doesn't make sense for her to include brand new TRACK employees. These folks are normally the cream of the crop at their respective colleges. These are the folks that will lead GM into the new designs and electric cars. The more GM TRACK employees that are laid off the harder it will be for GM to recruit from universities in the future.

I would suggest you find a job at a more stable company while your young and have less obligation. I've now been through days like these, at GM, 4 times, with the most recent in 2009. Leadership doesnt run the company by automotive knowledge, but with "what's trending" and "social media". I'm guessing GM sold all the cars that it can with the trending piece. Ie: time for Mary B. To step down!

Track Engineers are not safe. You probably have a better chance of not being let go than others. But really, it seems no one is safe.

A TRACK engineer friend was let go from GPS.

You don't need GM to guarentee a successful future for yourself. You earned the education and, even if you're applying it somewhere other than GM, you will build a great career. Don't worry.
