Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Something we should all remember for the future

Companies do not exist to employ people.

They exist to make money, and the truth is employees are expensive. It’s a good but rough life lesson for a lot of the NCH’s that got the axe and are experiencing this, if you want to guarantee yourself a job never stop learning and never get complacent. I feel for everyone that was impacted and I’m thankful that I got lucky this time.

The folks that got layed off before a year is obviously a shame, and clearly indicates gm is not managing there workforce.

Since the stockholders are responsible, ultimately, they must be held accountable for this action, starting at the top to the smallest investor. Take names and speak your mind or do nothing as they expect.

Corporations are a form of business ownership. Businesses exist to provide a service or product to their customers. When the business begins focusing on shareholders, executives, employees, government, or vendors, instead of their customers, it's game over. Too many examples to mention.

Yeah..what skills are managers acquiring? They just have power with no responsibility . They are there due to buddy system and looting the hard work of worker bees.

Never stop learning? I literally just graduated college and have been learning GM’s technology for the last 6 months. No NCH could prepare for this.

If you want more job security, get the get out of the automotive industry. Change careers and get into health-care. Retool yourself. You will have excellent job security a great career and often times sponsored continuing education.

If you cannot pay the employees, do not start a business.

I was harping on this last week but here it goes again...

A corporation is a social construct and cannot exist outside of a society. The stakeholders are: shareholders, vendors, customers, employees and the society as the whole.

Different societies rank the stakeholders differently and there is no right or wrong approach here. For example, germans put society and the worker at the top of the ranking order. China and Japan do it differently if compared to us. And each of these countries has thriving and successful companies. Also, after the WWII we've put the worker at the top of the pyramid as the worker was scarce, when the capital became scarce the shareholder rose to the top. There is nothing guaranteeing that our current stacking order will last forever.

I'd argue that since without the worker there would not be GM, or any other company, therefore just for a moment we may to consider some sense of loyalty. Things can be different, one just need to think beyond oversimplified social concepts we so often get bombarded with - just think...
