Trying to see if there was any logic other than target cost ... In our case the first person on the list of cuts was one of the most senior people ... but definitely the one with the highest salary. Then there were some new hires (who probably got the shortest end of the stick losing their unvested 401k matches but-necessary carnage in order to balance off the older employees with targets on their backs). In all the average age of those targeted was around 49 with the average age of those not targeted at 39.

Hardest working guy I've ever seen laid off this morning. Not sure of exact age, but over 50.
Wtf. They could at least let us keep the 401k
I was let go this morning. Not a white male. less than 3 years of service. Lost company match, which was substantial. A common theme in my group seemed to be people who were not long time GMers - either directly or indirectly(HP, EDS etc)

Work for GM less than 3 years (unvested 401K saved GM a lot of money)

Recently transfer from anther group to here
White, male, over 50 is the biggest pool so by far in our group. Salary does not seem to be a factor. Not many managers yet either. Still going on strong so we should see the whole picture soon.
40+ Years experience in Manufacturing. In IT the past 20 years. VDOC. Several colleagues of 50+ age let go.
Seems like salary and age were very big factors, and from my group the only level 5s/6s that were let go were not #1 performers, worked from home often, and never really added any value to the team other than the bare minimum ask.
I agree with salary and age being targeted (older targeted and younger to offset) ... but have heard of Many exceptional performers even in key growth areas getting cut.
The target priority appears to have been location, salary, age, and then performance. I know of several #1 performers that are over 50, yet they were cut. GM doesn't understand technology and virtual collaboration, either.
Even if the layoffs were necessary, keeping the 401K matches was not. It was a recruitment tool, in other words a promise of prosperity.
