The situation is bad but simple. With the layoffs at GM the other automotive companies in Michigan are buried with job applications from cut GM workers, as we speak. Now that I hear that a massive reorg and layoffs are in the making at Ford, getting a job might look more and more like the Hunger Games. A ton of jobless workers, a significantly smaller demand, not a good place to be righ now.

I bailed on GM and Michigan in October, ahead of the layoff news. Best decision I ever made.

Another option is to get a travel job....they pay more and you get the benefit of still living in MI where the cost of living is low and there is enough infrastructure and water supply to power many different industries. A travel job where you get to work from home while not traveling helps balance things out and I prefer it any day compared to the cube life with all the office politics.

Ford is expected to lay off between 25,000 and 50,000 workers around the world this quarter. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/2018/12/03/analyst-says-ford-cuts-could-eclipse-gm/2192067002/
I have to agree with you which is why we are putting our house up for sale. The ripple effect from these cuts are going to bring Michigan's economy to it's knees.
