Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

It’s basically cheaper to assemble cars anywhere else in the world then the US

That’s a fact we have to face and the trend of moving production to cheaper places is something car makers are doing for a long time. Taking production to places where it’s cheaper often has a consequence of a drop of quality in the final product, but the companies are aware of that, and frankly they don’t seem to have a big problem with that. So I understand their logic, but what I find perfidious is that GM, when it needs to appeal to the US customers ( and the American market is the most important car market in the world) prides itself of being a US company. On the other hand, when they, in their quest for profits close plants and cut US workers, destroying lives and families, then they say they are a multinational corporation.

I believe in patriotism. I am just not willing to pay more money for a car just because it is built in the USA. It is not my fault GM allowed costs to get out of control. Why should I have to pay for it?

GM's main market in the US is the Midwest and South.

Nobody on the Coasts buys GM vehicles.

The people in flyover country buy what they perceive to be American cars. "Apple pie and Chevrolet. "

They're not buying quality or fairly priced vehicles, they're buying their idea of patriotism.

The more GM builds vehicles in Mexico and China to increase profit margins, the more theyll jeopardize those patriotism sales.

How is a GM vehicle built in Mexico more American than a Toyota built in Kentucky?

People do buy GM cars because they're American not NAFTA or China. In cutting costs this way they are taking risks with revenue. Especially since AVs are much further from a solved problem than investment community knows.

I have no quality concerns buying a car assembled elsewhere. Maybe 40 years ago but not anymore.
