UP Special Agent a thing of the past ?

So the latest is the Special Agent is a thing of the past. Is this true? A year ago there were over 220 Agents nation wide, and that number has all most been reduced by 50%

UP Police is all ready spread so thin to the point that the job can’t effectively be done, employees can’t be protected and other Police agencies are called upon to do the job of the Special Agent.

Latest rumor is that UP Police will do NO proactive Police work and now also conduct claims investigations with numbers being reduced even further. Any thoughts ??

I was victim of a terrible Tuesday in November. The UP has been thinning out the special agent position for a while. Local law enforcement agencies have been utilized more and more for a couple of years and even more recently. I can guarantee you the the local law enforcement agencies are not as thorough as they do not have a vested interest when responding to calls on UP property, looking for trespassers, etc. Besides being in the field during respective shifts, special agents have been working on a "on call" basis while on duty as well as there is not enough personnel to have a person physically present any longer for 24 hrs a day. Fortunately, I am not in the toxic work environment that the UP police department has become and found employment with a local law enforcement agency. Life is better now with the UP in my rear view mirror. When you call RMCC asking for a "PO" to respond, have some patience, it's going to be a while...

Outside agencies cannot and will not take care of criminal activity against the railroad. It’s hard to paint a multi billion dollar company as a victim to outside law enforcement. Theyre handling very busy handling crime against their local citizens. Unless you work for the railroad with a vested interest for the employees and the railroad’s success it takes a very low priority. The Special Agents play very varied roles throughout the company assisting many other railroad departments. They specialize in railroad police work and know it better than anyone else. I have always had positive interaction with them and they do a great job. There are a lot of things they can do that no other department on the railroad can do for the railroad. Some of these services go unnoticed day to day, but when no one is there to take care of them they will be greatly missed. When the safety department was anulled, it was apparently a sign of what now is and isn’t important. Very difficult times ahead.

People don’t realize the millions in value of certain trains. They’re thinking raw materials, not appliances, flat screens, cars, car parts, food, and other consumer goods. Gold mine sitting in the middle of nowhere. When they figure that out, agents may be long gone.

I have a feeling trains on sidings will be a lot softer target, especially with single man crews.
