Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

HCL and Xerox Expand Strategic Partnership Email

Thursday morning at about 5 a.m. HCL sent an email out (which was just an image with text). Obviously you can't cut an paste the text from an image, so I will type the main parts here:

HCL and Xerox Expand Strategic Partnership to accelerate operational Transformation

We are excited to announce that building on a decade long Product engineering relationship, HCL has signed a managed services agreement with Xerox. HCL will manage portions of Xerox's shared services, including global administrative and support functions, including selected information technology and finance functions (excluding accounting). Leveraging HCL's global scale and capabilities, Xerox will strategically evolve its shared services into process-first, technology-led operations.

Highlights of the deal:

Deal size of $1.3 Billion TCV over 7 years

Delivery offerings across 9 service line

2500 Headcount across 5 captive countries & 3000 headcount across 27 non captive countries

95% OFFSHORING in a highly fragmented operations

30% FTE REDUCTION Envisaged through centralization & consolidation, process Re-engineering & Automation

Ok, this is taking longer to type than I had hoped. There is a section that says what's in it for HCL, then another section that says Drive for Xerox.

Then there is a section that is titled HCL's Solution tenet for Xerox:

Rebadge all employees from captive centres and right-shore 90% of roles from non captive centres to captive locations and retain 5% for governance and management.

Leverage Xerox existing investment in technology and supplement with next generation transformation tools including: Robotics process automation, AI, ML, IoT and NLP interventions.

Domain Platforms for various operations

Analytics and data visualization

30% Committed Productivity and potential to achieve additional 10-20% efficiencies

HCL will follow its proprietary AsseT transition methodology to ensure risk free migrations of roles between geographies with required visibilities of project progress and robust governance.

Finally at bottom there is a KEY ENABLERS sections that lists a bunch of Indian names of people who were on the core team and helped make this deal possible.

Then! Tonight we received an email backtracking all of this, which I will post as a comment below this.

Yes, I read the email that they attempted to recall HOURS after the fact. The writing is on the wall...our time as rebadged employees will be short. Not long after this cluster they sent out an addendum to our contract saying a minimum of six months of employment to include a 60 day notice AND they followed that with a sentence saying plus they'll provide any employment opportunities...the original contract says you must work 18 months to be eligible to apply for positions within HCL....heads up, sounds like they'll use this to avoid paying the 8 weeks of severance..

Meaning take the job we're offering or it means you quit...

Second scenario, Xerox gets sold and they don't have to honor the severance because the contract with Xerox is over because the company was sold...either way, no severance. Asking us to train our replacements just adds insult to injury.

I'm completely disgusted with this whole BS ordeal. 15+ years of wasted loyalty...

I agree 1owa,

i got the email but I read it before they recalled so i printed it and kept it!

You know they mean business when the word "accelerate" was in the title

i immediately said to my coworkers "there is no way they meant to send this"

Their facebook page talks about what this company does, they entered this deal to save Xerox $ but make a huge profit for themselves too!

I can't believe anyone at HCL is stupid enough to pretend this is not true or going to happen! Thy have committed to deliver 30%+ productivity to Xerox and they will need to move fast and aggressively to deliver it. Otherwise, with this deal size, they'll be in financial trouble very quickly!

Best of luck for all of you still left at XRX. It's going to be a rough few months.

2 HCL VPs happeoto be visiting our office the day that email came out. Someone asked them about it. VP #1 started to answer, but VP 2 cut him off, sat down, and told us that it was meant to be for advertising purposes or something along those lines. It was awkward.

That email was not erroneously sent! They intended to send that with full intention. If they can get enough former Xerox employees to jump ship, think of all the money HCL would save paying out 8/12 weeks of severance to people they want to dump. Xerox and HCL are a match made in heaven!

Actually, trump has already given big tax cuts. It was xerox leadership who’d decided not to put that money back into the company

I've said this before - this is the plan. Outsource all activities and leave a small core group to manage/inspect the work that was outsourced to Sanjay in Bangalore.

I look at it as a backup plan in case they arent able to sell the company. They will use this outsourcing activity to greatly reduce expenses to buy a few more years of revenue and profit. That will enable Icahn to get the return on his investment. Then he'll bail out and by that time there won't be much to save.

A message to all those still remaining in the former GIS cores that are naive enough to think that their jobs are going to be 'fine': if this doesn't clue you in to the short-term nature of your employment here, then you are as dim as the id--ts at XRX and HCL that are cramming this down our throats.

Complete and utter INCOMPETENCE at all levels of Xerox and HCL. WAKE UP PEOPLE! GTFO of this place! The economy is OUTSTANDING right now with record low unemployment thanks to solid economic indicators across the board. Get something LINED UP NOW before a long overdue recession comes in!

If history shows anything with HCL, there will be more stupid mistakes made. They did a layoff in 2012 which they send an email out only to those laid off. Even the local managers didn't know about it. Some thought it was a spam or a fake email til someone got ahold of an HR rep that confirmed it.

I was just about to post this ‘topic’

I’ll add to this great post instead. Thanks for taking the time to retype the email screenshot.

HCLs solution tenant for Xerox

Rebadge all employees from Captive centres and right-shore 90% of roles from non-captive centres to Captive locations and retain 5% for governance and management

Rebadge all employees

Outsource 90%

Keep 5%

In a panic someone must have said to HCL President “WTF C Vijayakumar? You need to stop telling the Xerox and Global employees how f**ked they are!”

So he changed his story:

“Today we erroneously sent an email about our expanded strategic partnership with Xerox”

“This is not a mistake we are taking lightly. The Xerox partnership is critically important to HCL, and this is an unfortunate misstep in what has otherwise been a relatively smooth transition. We will take active steps to get back on track.”

Those are the funniest lines of bulls**t I’ve heard yet during this HCL/Xerox partnership!

At my core I’m was told by leadership to stop sharing my opinion with coworkers : )

“You are getting everyone who’s happy with how things are, all riled up!”

That was easily the best thing said to me since “Santa Clause will bring you gifts”

Turns out I believe in Santa Clause more than I believe in the leadership at Xerox, Global, and my core

What does "captive centres" or "captive countries" mean?

Thank you for posting this! What a nightmare. I'm so sorry for our people that have been rebadged. They've had nothing good to say about it. HCL sounds like a mess of a company that bit off more than it can chew.

FTE = Full-time equivalent. Had to Google that one.

I also think the redaction email was full of lies just to cover their bums.

Colleagues

Today we erroneously sent an email about our expanded strategic partnership with Xerox that contained inaccurate and incomplete information. Specifically, the information in that email related to the percentage of jobs that will be offshored and the reduction in the number of full-time employees was grossly overstated. While we regularly review our business needs , we do not plan to take such wide scale action. In fact, doing so would not be consistent with our understanding with Xerox.

We are conducting an internal investigation to find out how this error was made. We’ve also reached out to Xerox leadership to assure them that we will immediately address this issue, most importantly with those who recently transitioned to our employ.

This is not a mistake we are taking lightly. The Xerox partnership is critically important to HCL, and this is an unfortunate misstep in what has otherwise been a relatively smooth transition. We will take active steps to get back on track.

We sincerely apologize to all current and future HCL colleagues for this mistake.

Best regards,

CVK

C Vijayakumar

President & CEO, HCL Technologies
