Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

How long can the company keep a person on furlough?

An outsider here, but my brother is an UP employee that got furloughed last month. He is feeling really stressed out as I imagine other folks that go the same treatment feel as well. Is there a legal deadline to which a person can be in tha status until they decide to let him go or call back in, or can that agony go on forever? Once again, excuse my ignorance

I got laid off as a boilermaker in November, are agreement was 24 months, off the call back after that! Go get a real job, it's gonna take 3-5 before they call back I'm sure!

this should be a red flag for him. I'm assuming by how you talk he's brand new and already laid off. now he should ask himself: is this an anomaly or something that happens everywhere and happens often? And the answer is of course that Union Pacific regularly hires in large numbers new classes of craft employees and lays them off as soon as the class is over or soon thereafter. The poor management of labor doesn't end with new hires. I've seen them bring "borrow outs" to a location and train them for 3 weeks. As soon as they were trained up and ready to work on their own, they sent the "borrow outs" back home. All that money and time spent and for what?

Depends on agreement. My union you just stay on furlough until a vacancy occurs that you can hold on your roster. They will call you back and you have x amount of days to mark up. Whether it be from retirement, quits, hiring, ect. As a furlough employee you are eligible for transfer to other crafts waving intracraft transfer requirements. I know guys who had been furloughed for almost 10yrs.

Talk to your union rep. I think you are dropped from furlough status or fired) after 1 year if you have less than three years of service, but if you have over three years of service, you could be called back indefinitely, you never lose furlough status.
