Contacting current employer

I'm applying for a job where it asks on the job application if they can contact my current employer. I definitely don't want my manager to know I'm applying for other jobs, so that's a big no from me, but I'm worried that will hurt my chances at getting the job.

Will it seem like I'm hiding something? If I say yes, are they even allowed to contact my current employer?

When they say contact your employer, it is only to ask HR if you work there, it is not to ask your line manager about what you are like etc. In fact under the DXC policy your line manager is not actually authorised to give a personal assessment of you to a recruiter if they are approached within the policy they have to refer the query to HR and not give ANY information. I do know managers though that do not follow that though or even know that. (certainly in uk)

I know in the US, CSC and EDS were none referenceble (only verified that you work there and how many years) and am guessing that DXC also is. Most companies are because it opens a window to litigations, to say anything more.

LOL, I believe the 'good ole boy' network is alive and well in the US's IT industry. As soon as you float a resume around, someone will call a friend to get unofficial information on you and then it will travel around your current employer you are looking. This is not always a bad thing. Many managers assume employee's of value always have feelers out.

In my experience "contact" doesn't occur until after they've 'conditionally' offered you the job.

For a reference these days, the HR folks in praque will admit no more than the fact you worked at DXC for x years. They won't even mention good attendance or anything else for fear of litigation these days - and most firms are the same.

But when you put down your boss and one other person for the actual reference, those contacts should not occur until there is just reason to start those background checks and by then, you know you've more or less got the job.

I would have thought DXC had long since past the point whereby the management would be worried that their staff would be applying for other jobs. I would think that's a given these days.

Just tell them you are currently employed, but your employer does not know you are looking. They will not contact. Also, check your employee tools in workday. You can download an official verification of employment for things like mortgage apps, etc. most companies will accept that as part of verification.

Agreed. Offers can be made contingent upon successful background checks. If they need a reference, you should be able to find many ex-DXC employees who they could contact.

Tell them they can only contact your employer once they make you an offer. Any reasonable employer would understand the reason.
