Thread regarding CVS layoffs

Part time hours and promotions question...

So I am a part time shift supervisor, and I’ve been with the company many years, all of them as a part-timer. (I’ve worked my way up the ladder from cashier to head cashier and now shift supervisor) My question is what exactly is required of me as a part time shift? My manager says that I am required to close the store one night a week. Is that true or is it just my SM telling me what they want? I know full-timers are required to close 2 nights a week regardless of whether you’re a manager or cashier. I know part time people have a limit of 29 hours a week, but I don’t know about their opening/closing requirements or what is required of them if their a supervisor? I just need to know if the rules and what I am actually told are the same thing or if what my manager is telling me vs what the actual rules are, are two different things. My other question is something my manager brought up but never followed through on... As a part timer, can I go up to operations supervisor or is shift as far as part-timers can go? I would like to go as far up the ladder as I can as a part-timer. Thank you in advance for your help! And please these are honest questions, no snarky comments or responses.

To answer the original poster, CVS consistently ranks in the top 25 worst companies to work for, so what do you expect. We are all in the same boat. Everybody hates working c-appy shifts. In my district, nobody wants to do nights or weekends anymore, because they are tired of all the CVS c-ap! However not much we can do. Maybe if more people said no to corporate things might change. BUT, People who respond here could be a little less harsh, though as we're all stuck working undesirable shifts. Welcome to retail!

Maybe the last poster was a little harsh, but why would entertain this persons questions? This is a retail job that is open 365, and 7-10 or 8-10 depending on your district. Why are you questioning closing? Why are you going to lay-off to see if someone can tell you know it’s not policy to close etc...... the fact that everyone including all managers aren’t calling this person a kook is alarming. Zero points for you.

As a store manager that has to close twice a week. You complaining about closing once a week is insulting. I hope you get termed for something eventually. Working hard is great, but at cvs we do this 9 box program. That’s a tool we use to rate our team. You would be a one, which is someone that should be moved out of the business. The fact that you are asking for a rule check on closing once a week is laughable. In the store no one cares. All we care about is what can make the business run optimally. You close one night, big deal. Retail is retail, and you aren’t as good as you think you are if you close once a week. Go cry some more you baby. Wah wah wah. I close one night a week.

To the previous poster, thank you for your response! Must be nice to work for a boss who takes care of you! I bust my butt and get nothing!

I mean I am a full time supervisor and I close 1 night a month so no you are not required to close. When I’m at work I don’t slack off and I get my work done for the day everyday. So basically I’m scratching my managers back by working my butt off and he pays me back by not making me close. So to answer the original posters questions- it’s at your managers discretion if you are required to close or not

Go to resources in radar print out the shift supervisor requirements, and that will answer all of your questions. Keep these questions to forums and yourself. You work in retail, retail is a terrible career path. If you want a better schedule, then quit and find something outside of it.

A poster in another thread said next year FS is going to pharmacy hours! So don’t worry! If that’s true then you’ll be able to leave early on the weekends!

Yes we should just be open 9 am to 3pm.

I mean sadly we would have to let you go, but you will have a life life balance. Just no money.

Work/life balance has never been a thing at cvs and never will be! At cvs work/life balance = work is your life and that’s balance. And yes, that’s a sad commentary about the working conditions here! So to the OP we feel your pain! It’s all about the store must always come first and screw the employees.

I can open and close if needed, but it would be nice to get a break once in a while, without having to ask for one. I have learned that at cvs unless you ask for day off you never get one. And for the record, last year I had the highest customer service scores of any manager in my store and am one of the hardest working people in my store. Just in case anyone was thinking I am some kind of slacker, no I bust my onions every shift I am there!! It’s just that almost 19 years of “requirements” have worn me out. In case anyone wonders, YES burnout is a real problem at cvs! And if I’m feeling burnout as a part timer, I can only wonder how full timers feel! Truth is, I have too many years in to quit now, and beside quitters never win. So I am going to stick it out! But, to the poster who talked about seniority and paying your dues, you hit the nail right on the head!

Really don’t understand if it matters if required. For a shift you should have open availability anyway so if you close every shift it is what the stores needs are. Don’t get even questioning this.

Actually the real problem is at cvs you NEVER pay your dues. In many lines of work, you pay your dues and over time you gain seniority and with that seniority you get shifts of your choice. At cvs you never pay your dues, never gain seniority, and always work like you’re a rookie in year one! So years of service mean nothing at cvs, and that’s the problem!

I need a winner like you working for me and questioning every shift I schedule you. It’s about business needs or making my life easier , that’s why managers hire people, not do I can make your job just like you like it !

Thank you for responding! I understand your points, as per the 1 night a week thing, I was more wondering what the official cvs rulebook said. The truth is, I don’t ask as many questions as I should, because I am careful not to rock the boat and then have them except more from me than I can handle. I have learned from all my years at cvs, sometimes it’s best just to keep a low profile and not ask too many questions.

If your manager says you need to work 1 night a week then you do. Why would you ask. Sounds like you want to change your availability and they said if so they would have to bring in someone else.

So no, you don’t have to work anything you don’t want to, but they don’t have to schedule you and may hire someone to meet the needs.

And no you can’t move up to an ops supervisor or ops manager as part time.

They are fill time positions.

You can definitely be required to close at lest one night per week. If you have been there for "many years" clearly you have seen this, no?
