Thread regarding UNFI (United Natural Foods Inc.) layoffs

Is this even legal?

Can United Natural Foods really lay off so many people without severance?

Talk about kicking long-term employees when they're down - not only do they want to take away our livelihood, but also any safety net that could mean a world of difference to so many people.

Issuewith their layoffs is:

  • They are laying people off just prior to the sign on bonus they brag about.
  • While they are laying off and shoving workers out one door, they are hiring to fill those positions thru another door.
  • Most of those being laid off are hispanics.

This in a non-union plant in WA

UNFI does NOT value their employees therefore you will get nothing. They would rather pay temp workers more money and bonuses, than take care of their existing workers in the NW.

Stingy Spinner is not getting enough pay at over 6 MILLION! Must have more...... This company has absolutely no integrity.

They can do whatever they want as long as layoffs are less than 100 people at a time...

If your company policy includes severance language, then yes they will have to pay. Typically, employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement will have to demand and negotiate severance. Most states in the USA to not require employers to offer them. Usually it is in the best interest of a company to offer it though. Twist their arm a bit. They probably do not want employees to quit prematurely. Nor do the want a bitter unproductive workforce. If you are a Union employee, organize your members now! Demand your Locals to get severance package proposals on the bargaining table. If the company wont bargain, take a strike vote and shut down. What do you have to lose when all is lost? Many companies including union shops, will give a comprehensive severance package based on years of service. Its the right thing to do. Good luck.

US law has no requirement of severance whatsoever. Companies give it along with obligations attached for their own benefit, not yours.
