Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Are furloughed folks really looking for other jobs?

As a furloughed worker I found myself in a situation that the hope that they will call me back in at some point is literary preventing me from actively looking for another job. Can’t say that I was depressed, never been a lazy guy, but I still feel like the part of the UP community so maybe I;m just afraid to act and break ties with the company that I gave years of my life. Anyone feel the same way?

I already left. I don’t trust UP to have my back.

Feel the same way. But look at it this way. They have no problem cutting ties with you. They are all about fattening their pockets and will cut your throat to do so. So move on and take your talents to a place that will appreciate it. Moving on also. I will walk away my way before I let them force me out. So keep your head up bro and find another gig.

Yep...pull the plug and move on. If it helps, write a closure letter to finally put an end to it (in your own mind). Furlough can be a mental stressor for some people so don't fret over it. But yeah...pick up and move on with something else -- you may find a path that you never would've even imagined!!

I'm not a "screw UP" kind of person but I definitely think you should be smart. This is a 2020 plan, so even if you want to come back, I don't think there will be any significant movement before the end of the year. You should definitely be looking for another job. You may find another job and community you like more and may save yourself from being homeless while you're at it. There's no reason you can't come back if they eventually ask even if you've found another job.

I got furloughed and got a better paying job working days and weekends off. You might as well look or work as I doubt you would be called back before your insurance runs out. 4 months goes by pretty quick. Screw UP, there's better opportunities out there. It was fun working with my coworkers but half of them are coming over to where i'm working.

Go find another job and when its time to get re-activated you can make the choice to go back or not. Depending where you were on the list it may be years.

Hell yes, I looked for a job, and got one with weekends off, day shift only, and way cleaner.

You're just being dumb. The company has shown you that it doesn't care about, so why should you care about it. This company is a corporate psychopath.
