Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

How it is done

I spent 20 years with Sun/Oracle. When the hammer came down they called all engineering staff into the board room and we were told at 9:05 am. “Your jobs as you know then no longer exist”. We were then given our paperwork. Told to be at an hr appointment with someone we didn’t know and told of our payout. Most of us had spent 20+++ years there and where just about to enter retirement. I’m 60. Oh and they hired 4 people in India to replace every one of us at a fraction of the cost.

This post paints a good picture of how the layoffs are actually done at Oracle. I took this from @YeR668D-1rut and reposted it.

The crux of the issue is those who got the company into the positions of failure are usually the ones that get to float away with golden parachutes. Yeah, ideas and promises don't always work out, usually less than a 50/50 gamble on things that matter. Those that toil away to try to make things work always loose, while a select few are highly rewarded at the expense of many.

What do you want Oracle to do differently?

With the number of workplace shootings, I see the process moving towards calling you at home and telling you to not come into work.

Yes it s---s laying off people, but they do give up to 26 weeks of severance. This is capitalism. Your product is not worth staffing with expensive US salaries. Oracle does hire lots of engineers in the US so it not like everything is going overseas; in addition I think there is Much less of a difference In idc and us salaries.

So would you rather get a long notice period instead? I was rif'd in a similar way and it's fine for me to hear it all at once and not spend months of stress thinking about it. I got my check, took 2 weeks off and moved my family to NC - got a job with a smaller company and a large increase in pay. Plus real vacation days and stock options. I have no complaints except I wish Oracle had rif'd me sooner. I'm glad to be gone. Life is definitely better but you have to be flexible to move, sell your house and go where the money is.
