Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Layoffs done?

It’s been quiet in our area. (IT)I believe we have met what Vena wants. Layoffs are done for us right? How come noone is saying anything or happy about that?

It's not that they're lying, it's just that the IT managers are naive. For a very long time, UP managed the IT department the right way, thanks to LT (who knows what's ahead and has smartly decided to retire). Now that UP executives have caught the EHH PSR disease, IT is being treated like commodity labor. The IT managers still cannot get their heads around this, and they really want to believe that "this will be the last layoff; now we can rebuild." But it's just not true. Don't fall for it!

Our department was told that they will meet the 30% with attrition this year. That logically tells me we are done. Is sonebody lying to all of us? And if they are, why would I stick around with people who can’t be trusted? What game is this exactly?

I can’t imagine anyone with any legitimate IT skills wanting to come to Union Pacific Railroad. I’m sure UP is way down the list somewhere between Cricket Wireless and Dell technical support. I’m not hating. Take whatever job you need to survive. But let’s not kid ourselves here. You probably have more long term stability at America Online right now.

And when there are new leaders and it’s time to rebuild UP, how many IT people will want to risk going to a company with UP’s reputation, especially if it requires relocating.....

IT employees were told that if the dept met 2019 attrition projections then there shouldn't be any more layoffs this year

And would you care to tell the class what team that is?

There's no way that layoffs are done in IT. People like Vena have no training in IT, no appreciation of how much value IT adds to the company, and have no idea valuable particular development projects are. They certainly don't understand how to manage IT innovation. At best, people like him will treat IT like a commodity that can be purchased from India--low-quality, bug-infested hackwork that requires multiple re-writes. Before Vena took over, UP had achieved an excellent improvement in OR by leveraging technology and hiring an excellent IT staff. That staff has been decimated and demoralized, and they're ready to jump ship.

I kind of doubt layoffs are done in IT, particularly since CADX is due to wind down at some point and NetControl still has a few people left. Also, how has it been "quiet" when the last major layoff was like a month ago?
