Unfortunately or fortunately I was laid off from MPG. At beginning, I didn't understand it because Mary Barra says more focus on EV & AV and I was working on them. I was very disappointed because I thought I could work there until retirement. But later I think I understood it. I was laid off due to my specific job function is not considered as core competency although it's related to EV & AV.
To be honest, I would like to thank GM and Mary Barra for laying me off. When in GM, I was lucky to have a chance to meet Mary Barra in person. I even shook hand with her and took a picture with her. She is really a nice lady and I respect her. Along my career, I have worked for many companies including 2 major OEMs and 2 tier 1 suppliers. I would say GM is the best company I have ever worked for. Here I tell you why.
First, although I was laid off, I still got a big bonus for last year's performance, plus 1 month of severance pay and three months of outplacement services which is very very good. That's a big cushion for me. Just for that, I would like to thank GM and Mary Barra.
Second, I was laid off before, but I didn't wake up due to some reasons. This time I think I finally woke up. Without this lay-off, I am probably still sleeping now. Along my career, I never thought much about career path. After I got hired, I just focused on work and didn't think much about what I should do in the future. Now I realized it's a big mistake. After working for almost 28 years, it's kind of late to realize it, but it's not too late. So for this, I would like to thank GM and Mary Barra too.
World is changing faster and faster. We have to adapt to it.
