Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Risk staying or taking a lower paid job?

I was offered a job outside the railroad industry that is lower in pay than the curen one that i have at UP. Never thought this would be a dilemma for me, given that I like my job and I’m pretty satisfied with the pay, but this uncertainty is killing me. A lot of employees doing the same job were let go, so on the one hand I don’t want to leave , but on the other hand I don’t want to fall victim to the company and the layoffs and ending up unemployed. Any advice?

Leave. There are lots of companies hiring now because of the good economy. 20 years ago I would have said to stay because of the great benefits but since then they have been taken away to the point that it’s not worth the worry.

And after a while, you can work on points for style

Like the club tie, and the firm handshake

A certain look in the eye and an easy smile

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to

So that when they turn their backs on you,

You'll get the chance to put the knife in

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder

You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older

And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south

Hide your head in the sand,

I understand about indecision. I don’t care if I get behind. People living in competition. All I want is to have my piece of mind.

Now you’re climbing to the top of the company ladder. Hope it don’t take too long. Don’t you see there’ll come a day when it won’t matter. Come a day when your long gone.

Infuriating is right. Pay into RRB all that time and get laid off. You can hear the money you paid in every month going right down the toilet, or rather being doled out to your former colleagues.....

“Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go,

But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay,

You knew it was right, wasn't wrong.

Still, you knew you wouldn't be very long.

Go or stay, stay or go,

Start to go again and change your mind again.

It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go,

But still, have the feeling that you wanted to stay.

Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do.

I'll go.

I'll stay.”

Leave if your 40 or below, stay if your 40 and above. Nothing is for certain though.

Well i remember when i was 17

My father told me pick your dream

Because life aint easy as it it seems

When you get older youll see what i mean.

Allright yeah

Ride it out! No job is permanent including the one that your considering going to. Apply for jobs during the meantime that might be be an upward move for you. All of this also depends on your age and where your are in life. If taking a stable job with less pay, then it may very well be worth going to for peace of mind. It may also open another door to something more satisfying. jmo good luck.

How much lower? You may be surprised that your take home will be the same or more from a job where you don’t have RRT1 RRT2 deductions. RR pay is easily inflated (I would estimate close to 20%) to adjust for the RRT1/2 deductions which is great if you make it to retirement age. Infuriating if you don’t.

Pretend it’s the end of the Vietnam war and you’re being evacuated from the rooftop of the embassy via helicopter. Get out at any cost!!!!!!

Another option: stay but start looking for a higher paying job. Agree though if you are young get another job.
