Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

If I had...

To choose between working in my position at AIG for the rest of my life vs s--c-de; I would choose s--c-de. I would choose s--c-de twice if I could.

When a human spends the majority of the day with absolutely zero purpose, that person will deem their life, as a whole, purposeless.

Fortunately, I am actively applying for other positions which suit my skillset, but It's hard to even get an interview and after spending entire day doing mindless monkey-work b---s---, I'm so demotivated and disengaged from life that I'm sure the quality of my Res/CV takes a hit.

I hate this office and the low-IQ middle management, I hate the old-a-- CEO, I hate PZ and his sh---eating grin, and I hate myself for wasting my life away at this sh--hole babyboomers still call a company.

This company is embarrassing

It's a job, not your life. You must be a snowflake to make such drama over something like a job.

Appears also you've been sheltered all your life from real pain and suffering. I agree with you on most management. And, what direction AIG goes is uncertain.

But you need to learn to.s--- it up, unplug from work whenever you can, and most of all, keep your mind on your goals. Good luck.

First off if you really feel upset to that extreme please do talk with someone.

The reality is even when a person loves their job they hate 20% of it.

The reality is over the course of a career (especially in corporate) things ebb and flow. There are periods of great challenge and satisfaction and periods of less. Even including frustration and boredom.

The reality is most people find the brass ring they chased takes them far away from the work they enjoyed to a world of administrative overhead and bureaucracy.

We all have to find ways to manage our job satisfaction against this reality.

Some change the type of career they pursue. Some purposely stay on the move between companies. Some choose to only work contract vs. Employee jobs.

Some look for the challenge or more so the satisfaction elsewhere. Might be a side job or volunteer work or hobby or church or kids or classes. Somewhere there is a meaningful and constant and more tangible satisfaction.

No one suggests everyone is destined for a lifelong miserable job experience but the reality is no one gets a lifelong totally challenging and satisfying one either. Not without understanding what works for them and actively avoiding or learning to manage through the ebbs and flows.

Sorry but I don't buy the notion that we are all supposed to succumb to the "reality" that where we spend the majority of our waking lives should make us want to k--l ourselves with a toxic amount of utter b---s---. Most BBs I know actually find fulfillment with their careers because they feel a sense of challenge, and grew up in a time where companies rewarded their employees for their loyalty...my mom has a pension check from her corporate job from decades ago...the same type of company we're at now.

I guess there's also a factor where many people feel like their jobs don't define them. It's just a place they go where they can collect a check and actually be the person they actually are once they get home...but imo I fee like they're just convincing themselves that's the truth.

Quantitatively, people round up or down to determine generalizations...but to ignore these set standards to scew your own reality is such a disservice. If you spend the majority of your life doing mindless bull, then shouldnt that mean your life is made up of mindless bull? Like, 100% according to logic, that's the truth. If someone wants to believe that the 4 hours of their waking time, at home, actually overtakes the 8.5 hours at their jobs...that's their belief and I guess I can understand that. But I don't run on feelings and skewing certain aspects of my life to paint a different picture.

It is what it is. As long as i'm at AIG, doing the work a 12 year old can do, shouldn't that mean my value as a human is as valuable as what a 12 year old has to offer?

The reality of grown up life and work dashing the illusion we grow up believing and expecting.

We've all been there. Even the BB's. They are just further removed from the illusion and more deeply impacted by the reality.

I don't think they're all bad people..I think most have good intentions..BUT:

A) the ones at my job are, by and large, insecure and the repercussions include the stonewalling of talented individuals into making their careers out of folding paper...

B) The ones in my personal life look at me like I'm crazy when I say I'm looking for a new job. As if working for a multinational, failing, company is what we should all aspire to do.

I don't think they're bad people but I will say the majority are out of touch with today's reality, and that doesn't help anybody.

I genuinely appreciate your anonymous support and hopefully I find something soon. I guess the mindless, mediocric-celebrating, dusty a-- corporate world isn't designed for everybody

Please leave soon. I hate for your sanity to be at stake

However. Please quit generalizing baby boomers. They are not all bad and your attitude toward them will not help you anywhere you go.
