Shouldn’t age be considered an asset instead of a liability? Yes, it comes with higher pay but it also comes with more experience and more knowledge.
No. Age does not guarantee more knowledge, and with using technology is usually more of a hindrance. If some of the 20-30 year olds have trouble with understanding new layouts, its worse for 40-50 and their performance will decrease. And age has nothing to do with pay, pay has to do with experience, the type and level of job, and how well they can negotiate. Add in the fact that the company wants new ideas to innovate. If you have been working the same job for 10 years, doing the same thing and not constantly learning new information, it is hard to innovate and improve performance compared to bringing someone else in from the outside. If you are too stubborn to constantly improve yourself and keep up with new information, teachings, and technology then you are no longer wanted and will be on the chopping block. Which is why more and more open positions are filled from outside instead of promoted within, and the promotions from within are usually saved for the over achievers or the people who come up with the innovations. This company does not owe you anything, no matter your age. If you can no longer improve, if you stagnate, if you no longer come up with ideas to improve your department or influence the rest of Verizon, then they no longer need you. Whether you are 20 or 50.
