Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why do laid off people come back ?

I personally know couple of guys I used to work with in RTP. They seem to be happy. They both worked elsewhere for couple of years after let go.

Continuous service is usually calculated as time served minus time away, so it’s usually substantial if you weren’t gone too long.

I think it’s continuous service, so I don’t think you would be eligible!

I would come back if I could for one day :) I would literally stay only long enough to be in the system and activated. I would then immediately put in for retirement and access to the Retiree medical plan. Since they bridge your years of service and I've achieved the magic age milestone since I've been gone that's all I need to be eligible.

They come back because they quickly realize that the out in the real world, you are expected to work, have relevant skills, be results driven, or all of the above.

None of that applies to making a living at Cisco.

How can a Cisco contractor afford to have a family & mortgage in the Bay Area?

Previous poster: meant to add to list to max 401k too**

**Rule of thumb: Diversify...never, ever, do an “all eggs in one basket” with your ESPP, RSUs, and 401k. Yes it is great the stock is running, but diversify when ESPP qualified. Yes a decade in with a mountain of ESPP and RSUs are nice, but take profits and spread proceeds, even to simple Roth IRA index funds. Then you have something truly diversified to show for your time, and if you do leave; you have something to fall back on.

Cisco is a great place to work as a contractor for later-in-career folks once blue badged but LR’d or leaving on own accord. Nothing wrong with that.

If you are mindful with your ESPP, RSU, mortgage payoff plan, not spending on expensive cars and vacations, and Roth IRA planning; you should easily be able to accumulate over $1Million in combined equity if you spend a decade at Cisco, even on less than $100k salary.

Contracting offers good pay, and a good balance of freedom.

Very happy.

stockholm syndrom: a condition which causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. These alliances result from a bond formed between captor and captives during intimate time together, but they are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims.

Because despite all of the b--ching and moaning found on this site Cisco is actually a very good place to work.
