Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

advanced degree perks

I just came across something interesting. Looks like about 40 people in IT are getting their advanced degrees at the expense of the company. Around 100k to 120k per pop. Looks Like one is in South Africa and I see a bunch of business class flights to and from which are definitely not cheap.

I'm a firm believer in Higher education, But is Randy Mott that tone deaf to be spending millions on his friends right now? Or are him and his buddies just wetting their beaks as much as they can while they're still here?

Getting an advanced degree only helps when you LEAVE GM.

Degrees are ignored inside. You can have every advanced degree in the world, but if you aren't brown-nosing properly, you won't get that promotion.

Conversely, if you hang out with the right guy, you can overcome a demotion AND get promoted well beyond your ability, despite not having an advanced degree. Just ask our VP of product integrity for more info on that.

Sometimes getting an advance degree helps but networking is the key.

There is a higher education stipend (Technical Education Program) for GMIT. There is a maximum yearly allowance that will only cover about 6 credits per calendar year. So if you want to complete your degree and have it be fully funded by GM, you need to be prepared to stay w/GM for about 5 years. I think there is a clawback clause on the funds if you decide to leave before that too.

Compare this with Whirlpool's program which will send you to Purdue's Engineering college and cover 100% of costs on top of your salary.

If you're gonna get your degree anyway, best let GM pay for part of it and cover the rest out of pocket. This way you can complete your degree in 2-3 years then jump ship.

Every other person in Ireland for some reason gets approval for STEP while people in Warren get to stand in line for ever. Talk about RM’s buddy promoting system.

Seems lile the majority of people on this site are IT ? Who the hell is Mott? I don't hear or see much on here from Warren or Pontiac, that must be somewhat getting back to normal there I guess.

Wow.. I didn't qualify for STEP since my classes did not apply directly to my role, so I was paying for my own undergraduate degree, but was let go along with the rest of my team back in February. Now I have a degree and no job.
