Thread regarding IBM layoffs

20k to be laid off?

This is another BIG round of layoffs of up to 20,000 out the door. IBM needs cash , hearing no cash pay outs and 30 days or less just like other businesses do . Good luck folks, you will never retire from IBM .

Please tell us where the 20k number came from? It sounds somewhat excessive, even for IBM...

I got my RA letter about an hour ago. After being rebadged to IBM after IBM took over infrastructure responsibilites, 18 months later I'm here. Being 57 doesnt help much either.

Yeah it is true. I just got today a chance to accept "leaving agreement" with x months salary. Was working as Network Engineer guy here in GBS/GTS Global service delivery center in central EU... There was one more guy today with me. Not sure how many will get this "leaving agreement" to leave. The paradox is that I always heard from other guys that our unit / delivery center is never firing its employees. My manager was even telling me month ago that our team needs at least 20 new ppl to supply the demand for the work.... Looks like it was not true at all...

There is an interesting rumor floating within IBM. It’s the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 rumor for GTS. 1/3 gets RA’ed, 1/3 gets absorbed by the other divisions, and 1/3 gets sold. (approx 33k within each 1/3) Revenue split goes 65% to IBM (IBM keeping the profitable parts) and 35% to the buyer (IBM selling off the lower profit parts). The 1/3 getting RA’ed is the shrink rate of contract renewal AGAIN ONLY RUMOR Good luck to all

Well this is going to leave a mark. When your lead cheer leader for your marquee product leaves, something is definitely up

If IBM want to trim down seriously and save a buck for minimal pain, it's time to purge the 'made men (and women)' holing up in exec positions. ITS, GBS, and IBM Global have plenty they can sacrifice for great gain and little business impact.

They need to get rid of all the executives and middle managers which are not only very very expensive but completely useless and provide zero value to the organization.

If they all left tomorrow, nothing would change operationally.

No ones immune this round. Even 'strategic' units like cloud and security will be hit. This is a top down, here's the number to cut kind of thing. Managers can pick the victims, but sometimes whole teams are being whacked, and there's no options/room to jump to new slots because cuts are so widespread.

IBM no longer has 400,000 employees. The current number is between 350k to to 360k. But IBM should really have no more than 250,000 employees to be competitive.
