Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Why are we being laid off if the issue is Europe?

I thought low sales in Europe are the reason for these layoffs? If that's the case, why are any of us being laid off? Plenty of employees oversees to cut...

We have layoffs in Europe as well. About 30%-40% white collar people withen the next few years. What worries me most is the lack of new vehicle programs. While the competition are optimizing their platform and multi-brand strategies we have stopped development work because of "reset". I never heard of a company that stopped with their work in order to spend 2 years discussing their internal organisation structure while scaring their employees with job-reaper visions. And yes the future may be autonomous electric driving but the competitors are still offering attractive products to gap the timespan (15 years) until this future has become reality.

Also the entire car is about to change. Instead of being the older model of combustion engine and all the other misc. moving parts, cars are going to be electric and autonomous vehicles. Which means, no transmission, no power steering pump, no fuel injection, and the list goes on. Most of the power will come from the battery, and the car will have 70% less parts than it did before. Computerization will be newest priority.

Expect the layoffs to be much larger than their announcement or estimate. Ford will be a totally different company making different products by the end of it.

Europe is the scapegoat. They really want to trim U.S. workers but found an excuse in Europe.

First, there are layoffs in EU. Second, management decided to not sell cars (except Mustang, which is low volume), so they gotvride of 4 car lines - seems to me that is reason enough to cut in US,

However, the best reason of all is what multiple posters are already said - it is a union contract yeR, and they would never get any concessions from union if they did not share to pIn with the white collar people, too. That is the real reason for all this...
