The store was definitely built before the 80's and the tile is actually crumbling everywhere...we also have statements up in our break room that says asbestos is in the floor tiles...
I'm in California. When Sears remodeled our store to down size it and make it smaller some of my fellow employees were concerned about the asbestos in our store. Someone called CALOSHA and they came in and inspected the building. CALOSHA couldn't believe all the asbestos hadn't been removed. They immediately shut down the whole building and made Sears bring in a certified and licensed asbestos removal team to remove all the asbestos before Sears could proceed with the remodel.
The QMM I worked for stayed on top of that and other environmental issues .
That was 25 years ago of course
Unless it’s an older Kmart that was never touched it’s probably been replaced. I’ve seen a few Kmart videos on YouTube that had asbestos tiles but they looked well maintained.
Many of the Sears switched them up in the mid 1980s.
Unless they’re being shredded or completely crumbling (not just cracked) vinyl asbestos tile is considered non friable. If the tiles are just popping up whole they can just glue down a new one.
Properly keeping them waxed is the way to safely preserve them and prevent wear. I know some of the stores are lazy in that regard whether they are asbestos or not.
The Sears store I worked at was remodeled a few times between the 1980's and the early 2000's.....During each remodel, the floor tile was removed and replaced with new tile.
If your store got remodeled within the past 20 years including floor tile, the asbestos tile should have been removed....unless they did it the lazy way and put new tile over the old tile.
If you are in California call CALOSHA and report it. Also call your county health department.
Was your store built before 1981/1982? If so there’s definitely asbestos in your floors.
I have voiced my concerns to both managers and my HR manager. They don't seem to care. A coworker overheard our managers talking about it to the new cleaning crew and telling them to be careful of the tiles because they're asbestosizing. I'm not sure if I believe that but I know they're trying to keep it secret...
That is not acceptable report this. If this is asbestos it is a health risk to all associates & customers!
