Many legitimate schools now offer many courses online, which would be a good way to start. When selecting a school, he needs to ensure that the school is ”Regionally Accredited”. The Regional Accreditation is mandated by many schools not only for transferring credits, but for teaching and administrative positions. Most proprietary schools are “Nationally Accredited”, which means the degree is basically useless in the education field (even many proprietary schools specify the Regional Accreditation in their hiring materials). I had taken one semester of courses through Everest Online. While I felt there teachers were fine, most of the students (unless they were also Corinthian employees) were tragic. Since there was a very strong “Group Project” component to the classes, it made course work miserable. In general, they had terrible grammar and no idea of what a “due date” means. I don’t believe Corinthian had any type of enrollment requirement for their degree programs other than a high school diploma (this excludes the nursing programs). IN SHORT, STAY AWAY FROM PROPRIETARY SCHOOLS SUCH AS CCI, PHOENIX, ECT. ALSO BEWARE OF NEWER NON-PROFITS THAT HAVE POPPED UP. It is much safer to go with a traditional state university or long standing, private and/or religious affiliated school. In this economy, I would suggest he hold onto his job as long as possible. However, I do have one warning. If he is ever put on a PIP (Personal Improvement Plan) that is unexpected, beware they are getting ready to fire him. Generally sometime in the next three to six months, and they’re starting their paper trail. From my experience, instructors are usually laid-off and get a severance package. I was a director level employee in the Education Department. I have many fond memories from my years of employment, until the school fell apart under a new president in 2010. I don’t think CCi has any money for classes or students; they’re too busy defending law suits (too bad they didn’t follow they’re own Integrity Statement). I have to admit the vindictive part of me is enjoying the thought of the stress the CCi Big Wigs must be under, and I hope it’s quadruple of that experienced by the average campus level employee. I think we were all duped!
