Speaking as someone who was laid off in September of 2012 I can tell you that your severance is based on your tenure. For instance I received 6 weeks of severance plus any earned and unused vacation time. The breakdown in the employee handbook is pretty accurate. Yes, you can negotiate. I was going to but I needed the money and did not have to time. If you get a severance package, you have two weeks to send it back to them. They give you a copy when you are laid off. You work for the university so you should have access to faculty who are judges or attorneys. Use those resources and have them take a look at it and give any advice. Good Luck!!
