If you have a shitty past and shitty grades it's likely you'll go to a shitty school and end up with shitty network. If you have a good hard working past and grades you'll likely end up in a shitty but well ranked school with people sharing similar past traits with you. You'll end up with the same degree but with a better network, better career options (often offered through your shitty school but good career center). You get the point...
