Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

To Regretful Military Student,. . .

You have a good point but your post is unbalanced. I am sure there are incompetent or inarticulate students who make it through UoP’s program. Yet, I am equally sure the same holds true for most schools. A simply review of the number of college degreed professional athletes who struggle to communicate intelligently will make it painfully apparent that higher education is not beneficial for everyone. There will always be a number of horror stories within any and every education institution. However, I think your comment is unfair because as you stated, you were able to read a classmate’s poorly written post but your comment failed to add you were not able to see the instructor’s response to that student or the grade that student received. In addition, there are numerous situations that can impede a student’s writing abilities. While the instructor of the course may be aware of a student’s personal circumstances, online classmates may not have knowledge of that same information. For example, in one of my classes at a traditional school, a classmate was recovering from a stroke which impaired both his writing and speaking. I’m sure someone such as you would have judged him incompetent and deemed the school a fraud based on his communications. An education and degree from any college or university is only as good as the student makes it. If you believe you received a negligible education, then your attitude will be communicated through your self-confidence and your actions and by your own thoughts and actions you will devalue your degree and the work you did to earn it. However, if you speak with pride, knowing you received a competent education, you will create value in your school, your degree, and the work you did to earn it. For example, what value would a Harvard degree carry if its alumni (and alumnae, for the diehard politically correct) spoke against its significance? By your actions and words, not your classmate’s, you are devaluing your degree.
